On your own, the south and centre of Phuket are the easiest to see: Wat Chalong, Big Buddha, Old Town and the viewpoints near Kata and Rawai. Below are hours, prices and distances checked on 19 October 2026 against official temple, municipal and provincial websites. Where there are no official hours, we say so.

Driving distances without traffic (OSRM) are given on each place page: Kata to Big Buddha 12.5 km, Old Town to Wat Chalong 9.3 km, Kata to Promthep 10.6 km.

Temples and Big Buddha

Wat Chalong (officially Wat Chaiyathararam) is open daily 07:00-17:00. Entry is free, donations are welcome and photos and video are allowed, according to the temple itself. Shoulders, chest and knees must be covered, and shoes come off before temple buildings.

Big Buddha sits on top of Nakkerd Hill. According to Karon Municipality the statue is 45 m high and 25.45 m wide at the knees, clad in white Burmese marble. It is open daily 06:00-19:00. From Chalong a mountain road along Soi Yod Saneh 1 leads up, 5.4 km according to the province. The municipality page has no official dress rules, so dress as for Wat Chalong.

Wat Phra Thong in the north keeps a golden Buddha image half buried in the ground. According to the provincial website the museum at the temple is free and open daily 07:00-17:00. It is easy to combine with a drive from or to the airport.

Old Town and markets

Phuket Old Town is a quarter of Sino-Portuguese shophouses built in the tin-mining era. The municipality says you can walk it all day for free, and the Lard Yai Sunday market runs only on Sundays from 16:00 to 22:00. What to see by day is in our Old Town guide.

In Patong, the Banzaan Night Plaza market runs 18:00-24:00 according to the market’s website, and the fresh market in the same place 06:00-13:00. Other night markets and their disputed schedules are on the Phuket markets page.

Viewpoints and sunset

Karon Viewpoint stands on a hill beside road 4233 towards Promthep Cape. Karon Municipality says you can see three beaches from it, Kata Noi, Kata and Karon, plus Ko Pu island, and that there is a small pavilion at the top. The source gives no hours or fee. It is 3.5 km from Kata.

Promthep Cape is the southern tip of the island, 7 km from Rawai Beach. The provincial site calls it the best place for sunset in Phuket, better on clear days, and mentions flights of steps up to the top. Sunset in October is around 18:10 (Thaipedia calculation by the NOAA method), so arrive an hour early. No entry fee or hours are given on the official pages. Stay back from the edge of the wet rocks: on 12 May 2023 a wave swept two tourists off the tip and one was lost (Thai Post), details on the cape page.

Beaches on your own

Season decides. West-coast beaches face the waves from May to October, and a red flag means stay out of the water. What the municipalities say:

  • Kata: suitable for swimming and diving lessons, reef runs to Ko Pu island, popular with surfers
  • Kata Noi: about 800 m past Kata, short, no nightclubs or bars, recommended by the municipality for families, with clear and calm water almost all year
  • Nai Harn: very strong waves from May to October, not suitable for swimming, with no such warning for the winter months
  • Ya Nui: a small bay by Promthep, crowded in season, no taxis, little parking

Beaches by season and the east coast for summer are in our guide to calm beaches in Phuket. Flags and currents are covered in red flag and rip current.

Nature: waterfalls and the gibbon centre

According to the provincial site, Kathu Waterfall is smaller than Bang Pae and Ton Sai and has water only in the rainy season. Bang Pae and Ton Sai lie in the Khao Phra Thaeo reserve in the north, see our guides to Khao Phra Thaeo and Ton Sai.

The gibbon centre (Gibbon Rehabilitation Project) takes visitors by booking only: up to 36 guests a day, one-hour sessions in the morning, at midday and in the afternoon, and a 2.5-hour programme in the morning. The one-hour session costs 1,100 baht per adult (15+) and 650 baht per child 5-14 when booked online, free under 5, and 1,200 baht for walk-ins. The reserve gate fee, 200 baht per adult and 100 baht per child 3-14, is paid separately and in cash only. No transfer is provided.

A plan for two days

This is our plan from the distances and hours above, not source data.

  • Day 1, south. Wat Chalong in the morning, then Big Buddha (both open until the evening), Karon Viewpoint on the way down and sunset at Promthep Cape. Dinner in Kata or Rawai
  • Day 2, town. Old Town by day, coffee and lunch among the shophouses. On a Sunday stay for the Lard Yai market. On other days, Banzaan in Patong or the beach in the evening

The north (Wat Phra Thong, waterfalls, gibbon centre) works best as a separate half day on the way from the airport.

Getting around

Public transport on the island is sparse, and visitors use taxis, ride-hailing apps and rental cars. Prices, apps and rental rules are in our guides to taxis in Phuket and car rental. If you drive a private car with a child under 6, a child seat is required: the rule is in the guide to Thailand with kids.

What is better as a tour

Islands, Phang Nga Bay, the Similans and caves are reachable only by boat, and it is simpler to leave the logistics to an operator. Which islands to pick and when they close is in the guide to islands around Phuket, and the full catalogue is in Phuket excursions. For families there is a separate page, Phuket with kids.

FAQ

How many days do you need to see Phuket on your own?

Two days cover the main sights of the south and centre: Wat Chalong, Big Buddha, Karon Viewpoint and sunset at Promthep on day one, Old Town on day two. This is our estimate from distances, not source data. Add a day if you want the gibbon centre or a water park.

Do you pay to enter Big Buddha and Wat Chalong?

Wat Chalong is free, and the temple website says donations are welcome. Karon Municipality does not mention an entry fee for Big Buddha: its page gives only the hours, 06:00-19:00. Check at the gate on the day.

What should you wear to a temple in Phuket?

The Wat Chalong website asks visitors to cover shoulders, chest and knees and not to wear shoes inside temple buildings. We found no official dress code for Big Buddha, but it is a working shrine, so dress the same way. A sarong or light scarf in your bag solves it.

When is the Lard Yai Sunday market open?

According to Phuket City Municipality, only on Sundays from 16:00 to 22:00, on Thalang Road in Old Town. On other days you can still walk the quarter for free. For night markets in other areas see our markets page.

What can you see in Phuket in the rainy season?

Temples, Old Town, viewpoints and museums work all year. Kathu and Ton Sai waterfalls have the most water in the rainy season and are weak in the dry months. West-coast beaches can have strong waves from May to October, so check the flag. More on the wet months in our low-season guide.
