Whether a Phuket beach is calm depends first on the season and on which way the coast faces. Below is what municipal websites and the Department of National Parks say about specific beaches, and what is local experience, clearly marked. Checked on 17 October 2026.
Why waves depend on the season
From May to October the southwest monsoon blows over the Andaman Sea (Thai Meteorological Department), and westerly winds dominate at the Phuket station. The west coast, home to Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao, faces that wind. The east coast looks into Phang Nga Bay and the island shields it from westerly swell. From November to April it flips: the west is usually calm, which is why that is high season.
What the municipalities say
| Beach | Coast | Official description | May-October, our assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patong | west, wide bay | waves not very strong, shallow water deepening gradually | check the flag |
| Kalim | west, north of Patong | small, sand with pebbles, reef, surfers when windy | surf waves |
| Karon | west, straight beach about 3 km | fairly strong waves, mostly for sunbathing | frequent red flags |
| Kata | west | good for swimming and dive training, reef to Koh Pu, surfers | waves |
| Kata Noi | west, short bay | quiet, no bars, for families | open to the west, same swell and currents as Kata |
| Nai Harn | south | long beach, fine sand | strong waves May-October |
| Ya Nui | south, tiny bay | quiet, crowded in season, no taxis | open to the Andaman Sea, check the flag |
| Rawai | south, Chalong Bay | mud and rocks, not for swimming | not for swimming |
| Layan | northwest, Sirinat National Park | quiet and natural, Koh Kata islet | waves |
| Bang Tao | northwest, about 8 km | hotels, coral protected around Koh Waeo | waves |
Note that Patong’s description has no season attached, and “quiet” for Layan and Ya Nui means uncrowded, not necessarily wave-free. More on the south in our Nai Harn area guide and on Kata.
East coast and bays: calmer in low season
We found no official wave description for east coast beaches: the Wichit municipality website, which covers Ao Yon and Panwa, would not load. This part relies on geography and on local experience from community chats:
- Ao Yon and Cape Panwa: east coast, sheltered from westerly wind; locals name them first for calm summer water. From the airport to Ao Yon is 42.6 km, about 50 minutes (route)
- Tri Trang: cove south of Patong, often suggested as quieter
- Nai Yang: by the airport; locals say “partly calmer”, meaning not every day
- North end of Patong: residents report smaller waves than in the middle of the bay
None of this is a guarantee. In storms the east coast gets rough too.
High season: calm almost everywhere
December to March has the least rain (24-82 mm a month under TMD normals) and the west coast sea is usually flat. That is the time for the big beaches with facilities: Kata, Karon, Patong, Kamala, Surin, Nai Harn.
How to check the sea on the day
- Look at the flag: red means stay out, even if the waves look small
- Swim in the lifeguard zone
- A smooth, darker strip of water between breaking waves can be a rip current
- Ask your host or a beach cafe how the sea was in the morning
What to do if a current pulls you out is in red flags and rip currents. For the rainy season overall, see Phuket low season.
FAQ
Which Phuket beach has no waves in the rainy season?
From May to October the east coast is calmer: Ao Yon and Panwa in the southeast. This is local experience; we found no official description of these beaches' wave conditions. West and south coast beaches, including small Kata Noi and Ya Nui, face the open Andaman Sea and often have waves and red flags in these months.
What is the best Phuket beach for small children?
In high season most west coast beaches work: Kata, Kata Noi, Patong with its gentle slope. In low season pick the east coast and beaches with lifeguards, and check the flag. Rawai Beach is not for swimming: mud and rocks, and the water retreats about 100 metres at low tide.
Can you swim at Nai Harn in the low season?
Rawai municipality warns of strong waves at Nai Harn from May to October and advises against swimming. There is no such warning for the winter months. Neighbouring Ya Nui also faces the Andaman Sea, so for calm water in low season head to the east coast, to Ao Yon or Panwa.
Are there waves in Phuket in November?
November is a transition month: the monsoon weakens and rainfall halves compared with October. Locals say early November can still bring waves on the west coast, with calmer water later in the month. The flag on the day is what counts.
