Naklua, Pattaya: who it suits and what it costs to live there

Where Naklua is

Naklua (นาเกลือ in Thai, ‘salt fields’; also spelled Na Kluea) is the northern subdistrict of Pattaya City in Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province. It is where the town began: City Hall’s history describes Pattaya as a small fishing village in Naklua subdistrict. A Naklua sanitary district was set up in 1956, and the town’s first road ran from Naklua market down to the sea and then south along the shore.

The whole subdistrict lies inside Pattaya City. City Hall’s community map shows 7 villages (moo), of which moo 7 is Koh Larn island. On the mainland Naklua covers North Pattaya around City Hall, the old market and Lan Pho park, the Laem Ratchawet headland and Wongamat beach. City Hall’s own address is 171 moo 6, North Pattaya Road, Naklua. To the south is Nong Prue subdistrict, home to Central Pattaya and Jomtien.

The boundary is not obvious on the ground. By the Ministry of Public Health’s official addresses, Bangkok Hospital Pattaya on Sukhumvit Road is in Naklua, while Pattaya International Hospital on Soi Pattaya 4 is already in Nong Prue.

Who Naklua suits

• Anyone who wants two hospitals within 4 km. From Lan Pho market it is 1.3 km (3 minutes without traffic) to the state Pattaya Bhattamakun Hospital and 3.6 km (5 minutes) to the 300-bed private Bangkok Hospital Pattaya
• Market lovers. City Hall calls Lan Pho market and park one of the area’s key landmarks and decorated the park entrance for Chinese New Year 2026. OpenStreetMap shows 10 markets in the subdistrict
• Families who want a school in the subdistrict itself. Naklua has Lovell International School (moo 5, Soi Naklua) and the state Photisamphan Phitthayakhan secondary school on Pattaya-Naklua Road, with 2,714 pupils in 2020
• Anyone who needs the road to Bangkok. Suvarnabhumi is 116.5 km from Lan Pho market, against 122.2 km from central Pattaya
• People who want a Thai neighbourhood rather than the resort strip. Naklua has old communities around the market and temples, City Hall sits on North Pattaya Road, and the nightlife is a drive away: Walking Street is 9.9 km by road

Who should look elsewhere

• Anyone who wants to swim on the doorstep. Of the four beaches where City Hall has licensed beach services since 2024, only Wongamat is in the subdistrict. There is no water data for its beaches: the one PCD point, Naklua Market (index 32.8, sampled 2025-07-01), sits inland by its coordinates, 5.5 km from Wongamat
• Anyone who wants bars within walking distance. Walking Street and the centre are 10 km away, which means a taxi or scooter in the evening
• Families who want to choose among several international schools. Naklua has one international school on the Ministry of Education register; the other 10 in Bang Lamung district are in other subdistricts
• Anyone who needs a quick exit to the south. The U-Tapao terminal is 46.2 km from Lan Pho market (46 minutes without traffic), against 37 km from Jomtien Beach

Naklua by the numbers

The Treasury valuation is used for taxes and fees when a sale is registered; it is not a market price. Method: all residential units, with or without a balcony (only separate balcony rows, commercial units and other areas are dropped), median per floor, then per building, then across the subdistrict’s 65 buildings. The register files a few buildings named after other areas under Naklua, so the median is a guide. We do not publish rents until we have our own dated samples.

The sea, markets and landmarks

Water quality. PCD samples several points around the bay. At the ‘Naklua market’ point the MWQI on 1 July 2025 was 32.8, which PCD grades as ‘poor’ (25 to 50). Dissolved oxygen was 3.81 mg/l, faecal coliform 600 CFU per 100 ml, enterococci 82 CFU and transparency 0.5 m. For comparison, the ‘North Pattaya’ point scored 83.5 (‘good’) on 7 July 2025. Each is a single July 2025 sample in the rainy season, and the PCD does not certify beaches for swimming on that basis. The ‘Naklua market’ point’s coordinates in the PCD database fall inland, 3.6 km north-east of Lan Pho market and 5.5 km from Wongamat, so the database alone does not show where the water was taken, and we do not judge Naklua’s sea by that sample. In February 2024 City Hall put murky water off Wongamat down to storm runoff after a heavy downpour.

Property and new projects in Naklua

The Treasury register lists 65 condominiums in Naklua subdistrict, all with residential unit valuations. They include buildings with Wongamat in their name, Lumpini Ville Naklua-Wongamat and Lumpini Condo Town North Pattaya-Sukhumvit.

Living in Naklua: schools, hospitals, shops, transport

Schools. The Ministry of Education’s private school register (OPEC) lists one international school in Naklua: Lovell International School (นานาชาติเลิฟเวลล์), 159 moo 5, Soi Naklua off Pattaya-Naklua Road. Bang Lamung district has 11 in total; the rest are in Nong Prue, Pong, Huay Yai, Bang Lamung, Khao Mai Kaeo and Nong Pla Lai subdistricts. Naklua’s state schools on the OBEC list are Photisamphan Phitthayakhan secondary school on Pattaya-Naklua Road (2,714 pupils in 2020) and Bang Lamung secondary school near Sukhumvit Road (2,227). Pattaya City runs 11 schools of its own; OpenStreetMap places Mueang Pattaya Schools 2, 3, 4 and 9 in Naklua.

Hospitals. City Hall counts 6 hospitals in Pattaya: one state, one city-run and 4 private. In and near Naklua:

Distances: to Bhattamakun and to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, OSRM, 2026-10-17.

Shops. Within Naklua’s boundary OpenStreetMap shows, as of 2026-10-17, 4 supermarkets (including Big C and Lotus’s), 4 malls (Terminal 21, Central Marina, The Bay, Focus), 10 markets and 102 convenience stores. OpenStreetMap’s subdistrict boundaries do not match official addresses exactly, so treat this as a guide.

Transport. Pattaya’s public transport is the songthaew (baht bus); the drivers’ cooperative, Pattaya Transport Cooperative, takes part in the city’s safety campaigns. We found no official route maps or fares on City Hall’s site and do not publish them. After a foreign tourist died falling from a songthaew in July 2024, the city put reminders in the vehicles: press the buzzer and wait for the truck to stop. Seasons and weather

TMD’s weather station is in Pattaya itself (Phatthaya). Its 1991-2020 normals give 1,105.8 mm of rain a year. The dry season runs from December (11.7 mm, 1.9 rainy days) to February; the wettest months are September (213.6 mm) and October (224.5 mm, 17 rainy days).
