Compare Bangkok to Chiang Mai from accommodation to accommodation. Flying saves travel time, a sleeper train lets you lie down, and a coach can work when rail berths are unavailable or its terminal suits your plans. This guide uses SRT, airline and Nakhonchai Air information checked on 21 October 2026.
Flight, train or coach
| Option | Departure and arrival | Published journey information | Useful for | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct flight | BKK or DMK to CNX, depending on the flight | DMK examples take about 1 h 15-20 min in the air | Short trips with limited time | Airport code, baggage, total fare, check-in deadline |
| SRT train | Krung Thep Aphiwat to Chiang Mai | Day and overnight services; dated times in D-Ticket | A berth overnight or a daytime rail journey | Train, carriage, berth or seat and boarding station |
| Nakhonchai Air coach | Your booked Bangkok terminal to the booked Chiang Mai terminal | Example 19:35-05:35 next day, 10 hours | An overnight seat and a convenient terminal | Exact boarding point, class, seat map and refund terms |
The coach example comes from Nakhonchai Air’s route page, updated on 9 February 2026. It is a scheduled time. The operator excludes abnormal traffic, festivals and exceptional events from its usual estimate.
Flying: check BKK or DMK first
Do not stop at the word Bangkok in a search result. Check the three-letter departure code. Thai Airways sells Bangkok-Chiang Mai flights; the AirAsia MOVE DMK-CNX page displays direct-flight examples taking 1 h 15-20 min. One offer’s airport should not be assumed for another.
Airfares vary by departure date and included services. Compare the total after baggage and seat selection, change conditions and the check-in deadline. A route page’s “from” price is not a quote for your chosen flight. Flight duration also excludes airport transport, waiting and collecting bags.
If you arrive internationally at BKK and book onward from DMK, include the landside airport change in your plan. Use the Bangkok airport guide to assess it. Confirm whether you must collect and recheck luggage even when the airline branding looks the same.
Taking the train: station and berth
Search Krung Thep Aphiwat to Chiang Mai in D-Ticket. Do not substitute the historic Hua Lamphong station from an older guide. Your issued ticket is the final reference for where to board.
Second class does not, by itself, mean a bed. D-Ticket separates the train, carriage and place selection. If sleeping is the purpose, check for sleeper/berth and an allocated upper or lower berth. Families should check the actual seat map rather than assuming consecutive booking steps put everyone together.
The process follows the official SRT D-Ticket help:
- Open D-Ticket through SRT and register or sign in
- Select Northern Line, Krung Thep Aphiwat, Chiang Mai and your departure date
- Compare available trains and select the intended carriage
- Enter each traveller’s document details and inspect the place map
- Review the total price, ticket conditions and payment method
- Save the issued ticket and recheck the station, date and departure time before travelling
This guide does not reproduce an unverified sleeper fare or times copied from an old timetable photograph. The interactive official timetable required additional access verification during our check, so a date-specific result was not captured.
Taking the coach: identify the actual terminal
Nakhonchai Air lists its own Bangkok terminal, Mo Chit and Rangsit on this route; Chiang Mai points include its own station and Arcade 3. This does not mean a ticket lets you board at any of them. Select your boarding point during booking and save its address.
Published examples include a 09:00 Gold Class arriving at 18:43, a 19:35 Gold Class arriving at 05:35 the following day, and a 21:45 First Class arriving at 07:15. Confirm your chosen service before payment. First Class and Gold Class are this operator’s products: another company’s “VIP” label is not an equivalent specification.
After an inbound flight, allow time to collect bags and reach the booked terminal. Landing time alone does not tell you which coach you can catch.
Before departure and after arrival
Recheck the train’s status with SRT and read your coach operator’s service notices before travelling. A saved ticket confirms a booking; changes to operations need a separate check. Compare departure and arrival dates carefully for overnight journeys.
Avoid a non-refundable activity immediately after the scheduled arrival of an overnight service. Check the drop-off address, luggage storage and early check-in arrangements first. The Chiang Mai guide covers neighbourhoods and a practical programme, the smoke-season guide covers air-quality planning, and the rail and coach guide explains booking in more detail.
FAQ
Which Bangkok station has trains to Chiang Mai?
Search Krung Thep Aphiwat to Chiang Mai in official D-Ticket. Confirm the boarding station on the issued ticket rather than relying on an older guide that says Hua Lamphong.
Can I sleep on the overnight train?
Choose a sleeper carriage and an allocated berth in D-Ticket. Second class includes different carriage types, so the class alone does not confirm a bed.
How much does Bangkok to Chiang Mai cost?
Flights vary with the date and baggage, trains with the service and place, and coaches with the operator and class. A date-specific D-Ticket fare was not captured in this check; compare the final official booking totals rather than route-page promotional prices.
