Where Karon is and what it covers

Karon (กะรน) is a subdistrict (tambon) of Mueang Phuket district on the island’s southwest coast. It is governed by Karon Municipality, whose area matches the subdistrict: 20 km², or about 14,556 rai. The municipality grew out of a sanitary district set up in 1987 and became a municipality in 1999.

The key point when you search for a home: Kata is part of Karon subdistrict. The subdistrict has four villages: Karon, Khok Tanot-Kata, Bang La and Khok Chang. Government registers and the Treasury valuation treat Karon and Kata as one area, while listings split them by beach. Kata as a place to live has its own page: Kata district.

The municipality gives its boundaries as Patong to the north, Rawai to the south, Chalong to the east and the Andaman Sea to the west. The south of the subdistrict is hilly; the east is lowland and foothills.

DOPA records 7,626 registered residents and 9,256 registered house addresses for December 2025, so there are more addresses than residents. That is typical of a resort area where many homes and condos belong to hotels or to owners registered elsewhere. DOPA counts almost everyone in a single subdistrict line, so there is no separate figure for Karon and Kata.

Who Karon suits

  • People who want a long beach with dunes. The municipality describes Karon Beach as the second largest on Phuket: a little over 3 km, almost straight, with fine white sand and dunes covered in beach morning glory
  • People who want to be 11 minutes from Patong without its nightlife street. Karon’s municipal descriptions mention no nightlife street; hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops line the beach. Patong is 9.3 km away
  • Walkers who like parks and viewpoints. The subdistrict has Nong Han park with its lake, which the municipality calls the ‘lungs’ of Kata and Karon, the three-beach viewpoint on road 4233, and the Big Buddha on Nakkerd hill (45 m, open daily 6:00-19:00)
  • Buyers looking at an apartment on the slope between Karon and Kata. The Treasury register holds 29 residential condominiums here, and WeKaron (166 apartments, about 650 m to the beach) and Phenomenon Residence (293 apartments, about 900 m to the beach) are on sale

Who should skip Karon

  • Families with small children who need calm water from May to October. The municipality says Karon’s waves and wind are fairly strong even without reference to season, and in the monsoon the west coast takes the swell. Kata Noi is quieter: the municipality describes it as a beach with no clubs or bars, suited to families
  • Anyone for whom 43 km from the airport is too far. The drive takes about 48 minutes without traffic; Patong is 6 km closer
  • Buyers whose ceiling is below THB 59,000 per m² by valuation. The subdistrict’s median condo valuation (Karon together with Kata) is above Patong (THB 53,750) and Rawai (THB 51,500), and among subdistricts with 10 or more buildings only Kamala (THB 59,250) is higher
  • Anyone who needs a hospital within walking distance. There is no government hospital in the subdistrict; the nearest, in Patong, is 7.8 km away (about 9 minutes), and the provincial Vachira Phuket is 18.6 km away

Karon Beachbetween Patong and Kata, a little over 3 km, second largest on Phuket; fine white sand; fairly strong waves and wind, most visitors sunbathe and walk; a naga statue in the middle
Karon Noi Beachclose to Karon, quiet and surrounded by nature, for people who value privacy
Nui Beachsmall beach near Karon View Point; the access road is rough, so the municipality suggests parking and taking a local villagers’ vehicle: about 6 km round trip, THB 100 per person
Kata and Kata Noibays south of Karon, covered on the Kata Beach page
Karon View Pointon Route 4233 towards Promthep Cape, with views of Kata Noi, Kata and Karon

We found no official flag or lifeguard schedule for Karon’s beaches: the sites where it might be published sit behind a captcha. How to read the flags is explained in what a red flag means, and sheltered options for the wet season are in calm beaches.

FAQ

Kata or Karon: where should I stay?

They are one subdistrict and one municipality, 3 km apart. In the municipality's descriptions Karon is the longer, straighter beach with dunes and fairly strong surf, while Kata is a crescent bay with a reef out to Koh Pu where people swim and learn to dive. Families swimming in the dry season usually pick Kata or Kata Noi; Karon is better for long beach walks.

Is Karon Beach dangerous for swimming?

Karon Municipality says plainly that waves and wind on the beach are fairly strong and that most visitors sunbathe and walk rather than swim. From May to October the southwest monsoon hits the west coast and the risk rises. We found no official flag schedule for Karon, so only swim where lifeguards allow it and read [what a red flag means](/en/questions/red-flag-rip-current-phuket/).

How far is Karon from Phuket Airport?

43 km by road, about 48 minutes without traffic according to OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data. Without a taxi you can take the Phuket Smart Bus on its airport, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai route for THB 100 per ride as of October 2026.

Which is best for families: Karon, Kata or Patong?

Kata Noi is the quietest: the municipality describes it as a family beach without nightclubs or bars. Karon is calmer than Patong and has the large Nong Han park, but its surf is stronger than Kata's. The nearest government hospital is in Patong, 7.8 km or about 9 minutes from Karon.

Is the Big Buddha in Karon?

Yes. According to Karon Municipality, the Big Buddha stands on Nakkerd Hill within Karon subdistrict: the statue is 45 m tall and open daily from 6:00 to 19:00. More on visiting: [Big Buddha](/en/travel/phuket/sights/big-buddha/).

What is the weather like in Karon?

Karon has no weather station of its own; the nearest TMD station is in Phuket Town. Under the 1991-2020 normals the driest month is February (24 mm) and the wettest are September (350 mm) and October (336 mm). The municipality itself defines the rainy season as April to November.

How much is a condo in Karon?

Market prices depend on the project, and we show developers' prices with a date. For comparing areas there is the Treasury valuation: a median of THB 59,000 per m² across 29 condominiums in Karon subdistrict, Kata included, against THB 48,250 for the whole island. It is a valuation for taxes and transfer fees, not a sale price.

Are there schools in Karon?

Karon subdistrict has two state primary schools, Ban Kata and Wat Suwan Khiri Khet, both on Patak Road (OBEC list, 2020 data). There is no Ministry of Education licensed international school in the subdistrict: by the OPEC register the nearest are seven in Chalong and three in Rawai, and two more, QSI and Kajonkiet, are in Kathu subdistrict.
