Where Wongamat is

Wongamat (also spelled Wong Amat; วงศ์อมาตย์ in Thai) is the northern end of Pattaya: the beach north of the city’s central beach. Officially it sits in Naklua subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province, inside Pattaya City. On City Hall’s community map Wongamat and the neighbouring Laem Ratchawet headland are both in village (moo) 5 of Naklua.

The name comes from Soi Wongamat: City Hall’s history of Pattaya says the first lanes from the Pattaya-Naklua road down to the sea were named after the families who developed the town. Today City Hall gives the beach’s location as Soi Naklua 16.

Official statistics do not count Wongamat on its own. DOPA records 46,185 registered residents in all of Naklua subdistrict in December 2025, and 12,386 residents and 20,510 dwellings in moo 5. There are more dwellings than people because many condo units belong to owners registered elsewhere. City Hall estimates Pattaya’s actual population at 4-5 times the registered figure.

Who Wongamat suits

  • People who want the sea 6 km from the nightlife. Walking Street is 6.1 km by road; Terminal 21 mall in North Pattaya is 2.7 km
  • Anyone who wants a beach with its own rescue unit. Wongamat is one of four beaches where the city has licensed beach services since 2024, and its zone has a marine rescue unit of its own. On 9 October 2024, 15 umbrella and sunbed points were licensed there
  • Seafood lovers. City Hall says local fishermen sell their catch on the beach; 43 fishermen were licensed there in 2024
  • Anyone who needs a hospital within 3.4 km. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya is about 7 minutes without traffic, and the state Pattaya Bhattamakun Hospital is 3.5 km
  • People choosing a home by the sea in Naklua. The 16 buildings with Wongamat in the name have a median Treasury valuation of THB 52,463/m² (from 31,000 to 99,000), above the subdistrict’s 47,100; The Riviera Palm Beach was approved by EIA on 2025-12-08

Who should look elsewhere

  • People who want bars and markets at the door. Within 1 km of the beach OpenStreetMap shows 1 supermarket, 9 convenience stores and 2 markets. Central Pattaya has many times more within 1.5 km
  • Anyone who needs clean sand. In September 2025 City Hall cleared rocks from the waterline after fishermen complained, and promised a longer-term clean-up
  • People bothered by beach dogs. In August 2026 City Hall checked a dog bite complaint: 5-6 beach dogs fed by locals live there, and they were vaccinated against rabies
  • Owners planning nightly rentals. Short-term letting in condos is restricted by law; see our guide to short-term rental rules
  • Anyone flying via U-Tapao. The terminal is 47.2 km away, about 50 minutes without traffic, against 37 km from Jomtien Beach

The Treasury valuation is used for taxes and fees when a sale is registered; it is not a market price. Method: all residential units, with or without a balcony (only separate balcony rows, commercial units and other areas are dropped), median per floor, then per building, then across the subdistrict’s buildings. The Treasury also files a few buildings named after other areas under Naklua, so the subdistrict median is a guide, not a Wongamat price. We do not publish rents until we have our own dated samples.

Wongamat Beach: what City Hall and PCD say

Pattaya City Hall calls Wongamat a ‘hidden beach’ with a natural shoreline where fishermen sell fresh seafood. Since 2024 it has been one of four beaches where the city formally licenses trading and services, along with Pratumnak, Cosy and Asia beaches. On 9 October 2024 the licences on Wongamat covered 15 umbrella and sunbed operators, 39 masseurs and 43 fishermen. Jet skis and towed rides also operate at Wongamat; in May 2026 the city tightened licence, equipment and insurance checks for them.

Worth knowing before you buy or book:

  • Wongamat has its own marine rescue unit: City Hall lists three zones, Jomtien, Pattaya and Wongamat
  • On 30 January 2024, after a heavy downpour near Soi Naklua 16, pale murky water ran into the sea. City Hall inspected and said it was storm runoff carrying sediment from the drains, not hotel sewage. It tends to happen in heavy rain and with the first rain of the season
  • In September 2025 the city removed rocks washed onto the waterline so swimmers would not get hurt
  • In August 2026 the city checked a dog bite complaint; the 24-hour line for such cases is Pattaya Contact Center 1337

Water quality. PCD has no testing point on Wongamat itself. The nearest, ‘North Pattaya’ by the Selection hotel, is about 2 km south. On 7 July 2025 its marine water quality index (MWQI) was 83.5, which PCD grades as ‘good’ (above 80). Transparency was 1 m and enterococci 16 CFU per 100 ml. PCD also samples a point called ‘Naklua market’, which scored 32.8 (‘poor’) on 1 July 2025. By PCD’s own coordinates, though, that point lies inland, 3.6 km north-east of Lan Pho market and 5.5 km from Wongamat, so it says nothing about the sea at the beach. These are one-off July 2025 samples in the rainy season, not annual averages, and the PCD does not certify beaches for swimming on that basis.

Property and new projects in Wongamat

The Treasury register lists 16 residential condominiums in Naklua with Wongamat in their name, among them Wongamat Privacy (blocks A-C), Lumpini Ville Naklua-Wongamat, The Riviera Wongamat Beach, The Palm Wongamat Beach and Zire Wongamat. Their median valuation is THB 52,463 per m², ranging from 31,000 to 99,000 depending on the building. The search was by name, so buildings without ‘Wongamat’ in their name are not included.

New projects near the beach show up in ONEP’s Smart EIA Plus environmental review database:

Project (as named in the EIA register)Address in the EIAEIA approval date
The Riviera Palm BeachSoi Naklua 162025-12-08
Secret Garden CondominiumSoi Naklua 16/12025-05-28

An EIA approval confirms the project passed environmental review; it says nothing about tenure, completion dates or prices.

Before buying a condo as a foreigner, read how freehold, the 49% foreign quota and leasehold work: tenure and quota status must be confirmed for each project. The ‘75% quota’ and ‘99-year lease’ myths are covered separately.

Living in Wongamat: schools, hospitals, shops, transport

Schools. The Ministry of Education’s private school register (OPEC) lists 11 international schools in Bang Lamung district, one of them in Naklua: Lovell International School (นานาชาติเลิฟเวลล์), 159 moo 5, Soi Naklua off Pattaya-Naklua Road. The others are in Nong Prue, Pong, Huay Yai and other subdistricts. Naklua’s two state secondary schools on the OBEC list are Photisamphan Phitthayakhan on Pattaya-Naklua Road (2,714 pupils in 2020) and Bang Lamung School near Sukhumvit Road. Pattaya City runs 11 schools of its own; on OpenStreetMap, Mueang Pattaya School 9 is about 1 km from the beach.

Hospitals. City Hall counts 6 hospitals in Pattaya: one state, one city-run and 4 private. Closest to Wongamat:

HospitalTypekm from the beachMinutes, no traffic
Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, Sukhumvit km 143private, 300 beds per the Ministry of Public Health list3.47
Pattaya Bhattamakun Hospital (โรงพยาบาลพัทยาปัทมคุณ)state, per OpenStreetMap3.58

Distances: to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya and to Bhattamakun, OSRM, 2026-10-17. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya’s licence is confirmed by the Ministry of Public Health list of private hospitals as of 2026-07-31.

Shops. Within 1 km of the beach OpenStreetMap shows 1 supermarket, 9 convenience stores and 2 markets as of 2026-10-17. For a big shop people head to North Pattaya, where the map shows Terminal 21 (2.7 km by road), Central Marina, Big C and Lotus’s.

Transport. Pattaya’s main public transport is the songthaew (baht bus); the drivers’ cooperative, Pattaya Transport Cooperative (สหกรณ์เดินรถพัทยา), takes part in the city’s safety campaigns. We found no official route maps or fares on City Hall’s site and do not publish them. In 2024, after a foreign tourist died falling from a songthaew, the city put stickers in the vehicles: press the buzzer and wait for the truck to stop before getting off. Otherwise it is ride-hailing apps or your own scooter. Getting here from the capital is covered in Bangkok to Pattaya; airports in Pattaya airport guide.

Seasons and weather

The nearest TMD weather station is in Pattaya itself (Phatthaya, station 48 461). Its 1991-2020 normals give 1,105.8 mm of rain a year, about half of Phuket’s. The driest months are December (11.7 mm, 1.9 rainy days) and January (16.3 mm); the wettest are September (213.6 mm) and October (224.5 mm, 17 rainy days). North-easterly winds prevail from October to February, south-westerly from May to September. Month by month: Pattaya in October and in November.

FAQ

Where is Wongamat on the map?

At the northern end of Pattaya, in Naklua subdistrict of Bang Lamung district. City Hall locates the beach at Soi Naklua 16. On the city's community map Wongamat and the nearby Laem Ratchawet headland are in village (moo) 5 of Naklua. Terminal 21 in North Pattaya is 2.7 km away by road.

Can you swim at Wongamat Beach?

Yes. City Hall licenses beach umbrellas, massage and water sports there, and the Wongamat zone has its own marine rescue unit. PCD has no water-testing point on Wongamat itself; the nearest, North Pattaya, scored 83.5 ('good') in July 2025. That is a single sample with no newer readings in the database, and the PCD does not certify the beach for swimming on that basis. In 2025 the city cleared rocks from the waterline, and after very heavy rain murky storm runoff can reach the sea.

What is Wongamat Beach really like?

Going by City Hall's own reports: quieter than the central beach, with fishermen selling fresh seafood, but with rocks at the waterline at times and murky water after downpours. In August 2026 the city checked a complaint about a dog bite and vaccinated the 5-6 beach dogs against rabies. We do not repeat other people's reviews until we have checked them ourselves.

How far is Wongamat from the airport?

U-Tapao is 47.2 km, about 50 minutes without traffic. Suvarnabhumi is 123.1 km, about an hour and a half on the motorway. These are OSRM estimates on OpenStreetMap data; rush hour and the Pattaya turn-off add time. Ways to get here are covered in our Bangkok to Pattaya guide.

How much does a condo in Wongamat cost?

Market prices depend on the project; our catalogue shows them from the developer's site with a date, for example City Garden Tropicana from THB 2.7 million on 2026-10-17. For comparing areas, the Treasury valuation gives a median of THB 47,100 per m² across 65 residential condo buildings in Naklua, and THB 52,463 across the 16 buildings with Wongamat in their name (range 31,000-99,000). This is the tax and fee base, not an asking price.

Is Wongamat the same as Naklua?

Administratively, yes: Wongamat is part of Naklua subdistrict. Wongamat is the beach and moo 5 by the sea, while Naklua is the whole subdistrict, including the old market, Lan Pho park and the blocks along Sukhumvit Road. See our Naklua page for the rest of the area.

Wongamat or Jomtien: which is better to live in?

Wongamat is closer to central Pattaya and Bangkok: 123 km to Suvarnabhumi against 127 km from Jomtien. Jomtien is closer to U-Tapao (37 km against 47) and has the longer beach. We do not compare the areas on water quality: PCD has only one July 2025 sample for each point (83.5 at North Pattaya, 81.8 at central Jomtien), and it does not certify either for swimming on that basis.
