Where Chaweng is

Chaweng is a long beach on Koh Samui’s northeast coast, between Choeng Mon cape to the north and Chaweng Noi to the south. It is not an administrative unit of its own: it sits in Bophut subdistrict of Ko Samui district, Surat Thani province, and the whole island is run by a single city municipality.

Bophut subdistrict also covers Bophut village, Bang Rak with the Big Buddha, Choeng Mon and the airport, so official statistics only show Chaweng together with them: 20,521 registered residents in December 2025, more than a quarter of the island’s 70,999.

Who Chaweng suits

  • People who fly in. The airport is 5.1 km away, about 8 minutes
  • Anyone who wants a hospital close by. Bangkok Hospital Samui (50 beds) is 2.5 km from the beach, and Bophut subdistrict has six licensed private hospitals
  • People who shop without a car. OpenStreetMap shows Central Festival, Lotus’s, Tops, Saver Mart and a night market within 2.5 km of the beach
  • Summer travellers. From May to September Samui gets 102-134 mm of rain a month, a third of what Phuket gets in the same months

Who should look elsewhere

  • Travellers in October to December. This is Samui’s rainy peak: 295, 445 and 263 mm, with about 19 rainy days in November (TMD, 1991-2020 normals)
  • People arriving by car from the mainland. The Raja car ferry docks at Lipa Noi on the west coast, 26.8 km and about 31 minutes from Chaweng
  • Anyone who needs the public hospital. Koh Samui Hospital is near Nathon, 25.8 km away
  • Buyers looking for a registry-listed building in Chaweng itself. The Treasury registry only shows buildings by subdistrict, and Bophut’s 19 cover four areas at once

Property in Chaweng and valuations

The Treasury registry lists 19 residential condominiums with issued unit titles in Bophut subdistrict. It does not split the subdistrict into Chaweng, Bophut and Bang Rak, so the figure is shared. The highest valuation is The Brew Condo Samui at 75,550 THB/m², the lowest The Master Peak at 33,200.

Median condo valuation, THB/m²
  • Maenam (7 buildings) 50,550
  • All of Phuket (286) 48,250
  • All of Samui (27) 46,500
  • Bophut incl. Chaweng (19) 45,100

The valuation is used for taxes and fees when a sale is registered; it is not a sale price. Method: all residential units, the median per floor, then per building, then across the subdistrict’s buildings. Chaweng projects on sale are listed in our catalogue; we add them only after checking with the developer. Buying as a foreigner? Start with our guide to freehold, the 49% quota and leasehold.
