Thailand’s entry rules changed several times in 2026, and travel forums still quote the old 60-day visa exemption. This page puts every condition in one place, from official sources, as of 17 October 2026. Each topic links to a detailed guide.

Who can enter visa-free, and for how long

New Interior Ministry announcements, published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026, took effect on 15 September 2026. The 60-day visa exemption was revoked for all 93 countries. The categories, per TAT and Thai embassies:

WhoStayCondition
60 countries and territories on TAT’s list (UK, US, Australia, Canada, EU states, Japan and others)up to 30 daystourism only
Seychelles, Mauritiusup to 15 daystourism only
Azerbaijan, Belarus, Serbiavisa on arrival, up to 15 daysTHB 2,000 fee
Bilateral agreements (for example Russia, 30 days)90, 30 or 14 daysas set by the agreement
Everyone who entered before 15 Sep 2026until the date in the stampMFA clarification

The immigration officer at the border decides on entry and on the length of stay. The Royal Thai Embassy in London says visa-exempt travellers from listed countries may enter this way only twice per calendar year, while TAT specifies the limit for land-border checkpoints. For the full story of the 60-day rule, see how long you can stay in Thailand visa-free.

Visa on arrival

From 15 September 2026, Visa on Arrival is left for three nationalities: Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia (TAT). Requirements, per the Royal Thai Embassy in London:

  • Application form at the port of entry and a photo taken within 6 months
  • THB 2,000 fee, cash only, non-refundable
  • Passport valid for at least 6 months, with 2 blank pages
  • Fully paid onward ticket within 15 days
  • Funds: THB 10,000 per person or THB 20,000 per family

The stay is up to 15 days and cannot be extended, except for illness that prevents travel.

Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)

Every foreigner files the TDAC for every entry, whatever the basis: visa exemption, visa or visa on arrival. It is free, filed only at tdac.immigration.go.th, and within 3 days before arrival (including the arrival day). The TDAC is not a visa and does not replace one. Sites that charge money are clones: how to spot them in our TDAC guide.

Passport validity

  • Visas and visa on arrival: the passport must be valid for at least 6 months (Thai embassies)
  • Visa exemption: no single threshold in the law; some embassies (for example Astana) recommend at least 6 months from the date of arrival
  • Airlines: may refuse boarding with less than 6 months of validity, at the carrier’s discretion

In practice, fly with 6 months to spare.

Onward ticket and proof of funds

In its description of the visa exemption from 15 September 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy in London lists proof of onward travel within 30 days of arrival and THB 20,000 per person if the officer asks. On 6 July 2026 TAT reminded visitors that the proof-of-funds rule dates back to 1980 (amounts updated by an Interior Ministry announcement in 2000) and listed them by entry category:

Entry basisPer personPer family
Transit visa, certain visa-exempt casesTHB 10,000THB 20,000
Visa on arrivalTHB 10,000THB 20,000
Tourist visaTHB 20,000THB 40,000
Non-Immigrant visaTHB 20,000THB 40,000

Children under 12 are not counted. The sources differ for visa exemption: TAT mentions THB 10,000 for certain cases, the London embassy says THB 20,000 per person, so carrying THB 20,000 per adult is the safer plan.

In practice, checks are selective. What to carry, and what to do if your ticket is for day 31, is in do you need an onward ticket for Thailand.

FDA permits for controlled medicines are requested online at least 15 days before travel. All allowances are in our Thailand customs guide, and vapes and IQOS get their own page: can you bring a vape to Thailand.

Tourist fee and insurance

No tourist entry fee is charged as of October 2026. The national tourism policy committee approved a THB 450 rate, but the Cabinet has not. There is nothing to pay at entry now; details in our tourist fee explainer.

Insurance is not among the visa exemption and visa on arrival conditions published by the London embassy and TAT, so it is not checked at the border. Medical care for tourists is paid, so a policy is sensible, but it is your call, not an entry requirement.

If you need more than 30 days

  • Extension in Thailand: the visa exemption can be extended at an immigration office for THB 1,900, at the officer’s discretion: how to extend your visa exemption
  • Visa in advance: tourist and other visas are applied for at thaievisa.go.th
  • Remote work: the DTV is a 5-year visa with up to 180 days per entry
  • Border runs for a new stamp: these now come with limits, see our visa run guide

For arrival at Phuket and getting to the beaches, see Phuket airport.

This page is rechecked every 30 days, because entry rules changed several times in 2026.

FAQ

What are the Thailand entry requirements for US citizens in 2026?

US passport holders are on TAT's list of 60 countries and territories: from 15 September 2026 they can enter visa-free for up to 30 days, for tourism only. You need a valid passport, a TDAC filed on the official site, and you may be asked for onward travel within 30 days and proof of funds (THB 20,000 per person per the London embassy, THB 10,000 for certain visa-exempt cases per TAT). For longer stays or other purposes, apply for a visa at thaievisa.go.th.

What is the official website for Thailand entry?

The arrival card is filed only at tdac.immigration.go.th, run by the Immigration Bureau, and it is free. Visas are applied for at thaievisa.go.th. Sites that charge for the TDAC are clones: in March 2026 an Immigration Bureau spokesperson said at least 10% of foreign arrivals had registered through fake sites (Khaosod English).

How long must my passport be valid to enter Thailand?

Thai embassies require at least 6 months of validity for visas and visa on arrival. For visa exemption there is no single threshold in the law: some embassies, such as the one in Astana, ask for 6 months from the arrival date, and airlines may refuse boarding with less. Travel with at least 6 months to spare.

Do I need travel insurance to enter Thailand?

Insurance is not among the conditions for visa exemption or visa on arrival published by the Royal Thai Embassy in London and TAT, so it is not checked at the border. Medical care for tourists is paid, so we recommend a policy, but it is not an entry requirement. Long-stay visas have their own rules on thaievisa.go.th.

Can I bring a vape into Thailand?

No. E-cigarettes and refill liquids have been banned in Thailand since 2014, and customs confiscate them; fines apply. We cover the details in a separate guide.

Is there a tourist entry fee in Thailand?

Not as of October 2026. A THB 450 fee has been approved by the national tourism policy committee but not by the Cabinet. Any site asking you to pay an entry tax now is a scam.
