The onward ticket and proof of funds are the two questions people ask most before flying to Thailand. Below is what Thai embassies publish and how it plays out in practice, as of 17 October 2026.
What the rules say
From 15 September 2026 Thailand ended the 60-day visa exemption. Nationals of 60 countries and territories now get 30 days for tourism only (TAT), and other nationalities enter under separate bilateral agreements. See how many days you can stay visa-free.
| Requirement | Royal Thai Embassy London, visa exemption from 15.09.2026 |
|---|---|
| Onward travel | proof of onward travel within 30 days of arrival |
| Accommodation | proof of where you will stay |
| Funds | officers may ask for 20,000 baht per person (TAT cites 10,000 per person or 20,000 per family for certain visa-exempt cases) |
| Entries | visa-exempt entry only twice per calendar year |
Thai embassies also stress that permission to enter and the length of stay are decided by the immigration officer at the port of entry.
On 6 July 2026 TAT restated the amounts set by the Interior Ministry: THB 10,000 per person or 20,000 per family for a transit visa, visa on arrival and certain visa-exempt cases, and THB 20,000 or 40,000 for tourist and Non-Immigrant visas. Children under 12 are not counted. TAT does not say which visa-exempt cases fall under THB 10,000, so 20,000 baht per adult is the safer figure.
How it works in practice
Traveller reports in the community chats we follow suggest tickets and funds are checked at random. Questions are more likely if you have many recent entries, no hotel booking, or a ticket well beyond 30 days. That is practice, not a rule: any officer can ask on any day.
To get through calmly, carry:
- An onward ticket within 30 days, printed or on your phone
- A booking for at least the first nights, with the address
- Cash or a card statement covering 20,000 baht per adult (children under 12 are not counted)
- A completed TDAC from the official site only: TDAC explained
Staying longer than 30 days
- Extension at immigration: a visa-exempt stay can be extended for up to 30 days for a 1,900 baht fee, after arrival and at the officer’s discretion: how to extend
- Tourist visa: apply in advance via e-Visa; it carries its own permitted stay
- Leaving and re-entering: visa-exempt entries are capped and frequent runs draw questions, see visa runs

FAQ
Does Thailand require an onward ticket?
It can. For the visa exemption scheme from 15 September 2026, the Royal Thai Embassy in London lists proof of onward travel within 30 days and 20,000 baht per person (TAT cites 10,000 baht for certain visa-exempt cases). Not everyone is checked, but without a ticket you depend on the officer's discretion.
What if my return flight is on day 31?
Visa exemption is 30 days, so a day-31 flight is outside it. Options: book any onward flight within 30 days, get a tourist visa in advance, or apply for an extension at immigration after arrival. An extension is discretionary, so at the border it does not replace a ticket.
Does Thai immigration check 20,000 baht?
Officers may ask to see funds. The London embassy says 20,000 baht per person; TAT (July 2026) lists 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 per family for visa on arrival and certain visa-exempt cases, and 20,000 or 40,000 for a tourist visa, with children under 12 not counted. Travellers report this is done at random. Having cash or a card statement on hand settles it in a minute.
Can an airline refuse boarding without an onward ticket?
Yes. If a passenger is refused entry, the airline has to fly them back, so some carriers check for onward travel at check-in, especially on one-way bookings. We do not quote individual airline policies; check your carrier's website.
