Where Ao Nang is
Ao Nang (อ่าวนาง) is a subdistrict of Mueang Krabi district on the mainland Andaman coast, 18.4 km west of Chao Fa pier in Krabi Town. It takes in Ao Nang Beach with its promenade, the long Noppharat Thara Beach to the north and the Railay peninsula to the south, which is reached only by boat. It had 15,862 registered residents in December 2025 (DOPA).
Noppharat Thara beach gives its name to Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, which covers the islands you visit from Ao Nang, Phi Phi included. That is why island trips collect a national park fee.
Who Ao Nang suits
- First-time visitors to Krabi. Beach, cafes, shops, tours and boats are all in one place, so you barely need a car
- People who want the islands every day. Longtails to Railay leave from the beach, and boat trips to Poda, Chicken Island and Phi Phi start here too
- People who want a hospital nearby. The private 90-bed Wattanapat Ao Nang is 3.6 km from the beach, Krabi Nakharin International in town 15.2 km
- Families with school-age children. There is an OPEC-licensed international school in the subdistrict and another near Klong Muang
- Winter stays. December to April is dry: February has 36 mm of rain over 4 days under TMD normals
Who should look elsewhere
- People after a quiet, empty beach. Ao Nang is the centre of Krabi tourism. For quiet, look at Klong Muang or Koh Lanta
- Buyers who want dozens of new projects to choose from. The Treasury register lists only 9 condo buildings here, and the choice of projects on sale is limited
- People coming for the sea in summer. May to November brings 17-21 rainy days a month and boat trips get cancelled
- Frequent flyers out of Phuket. HKT airport is 156.9 km away, about 2.5 hours. Krabi airport is closer, 27.7 km

Schools. The OPEC register lists one international school in Ao Nang subdistrict (57 Moo 6); another, Krabi International, is in neighbouring Nong Thale near Klong Muang.

Where is Ao Nang?
On the mainland coast of Krabi province, in Mueang Krabi district, 18 km west of Krabi Town. The cliffs of the Railay peninsula rise to the south of the beach and Noppharat Thara beach runs to the north. All of it is one subdistrict, Ao Nang.
Is Ao Nang an island?
No, it is a beach and village on the mainland. The confusion comes from the boats: from here people head to the islands, such as Poda, Chicken Island and Phi Phi, and to the Railay peninsula, which has no road.
How do I get from Krabi airport to Ao Nang?
By road it is 27.7 km, about 33 minutes without traffic by OSRM, by taxi, hotel transfer or car through the outskirts of Krabi Town. From Phuket airport to Ao Nang it is 156.9 km, about 2 hours 25 minutes.
How do I get from Ao Nang to Railay?
Only by boat: OpenStreetMap shows no road to Railay's beaches. Longtails leave straight from Ao Nang Beach. We found no official boat fare list online, so we do not publish a price: it is posted at the ticket counter by the beach and is higher in the evening.
Can you swim in Ao Nang in the rainy season?
On calm days, yes, but from May to November TMD normals show 17-21 rainy days a month, the sea gets rough and island boats are cancelled. Watch the lifeguard flags. The best sea is from December to April: February has 36 mm of rain over 4 days.
