Where Phuket Town is

Phuket Town (Mueang Phuket in Thai) is the provincial capital on the island’s southeast coast. Officially the city is Phuket City Municipality: 12.6 km² across two subdistricts, Talat Nuea (4 km²) and Talat Yai (8 km²). Rassada surrounds it to the north and east, Wichit to the south and west. The municipality dates from 10 December 1935 and became a city municipality on 13 February 2004.

DOPA’s register counted 69,690 residents in December 2025: 48,752 in Talat Yai and 20,938 in Talat Nuea. The suburbs people also call “town” are separate municipalities: Wichit (56,129 residents, including Cape Panwa) and Rassada (52,040).

What is inside:

  • Old Town. A quarter of Sino-Portuguese shophouses from the tin-mining era and a clock tower. Every Sunday from 16:00 to 22:00 the Lard Yai walking street fills Thalang Road (municipality)
  • Chinese shrines and Wat Mongkol Nimit. Jui Tui, Put Jaw and Sang Tham are on the municipality’s list of places to visit
  • Saphan Hin cape. A seaside park at the end of Phuket Road with a monument to Captain Miles, a sports centre and a municipal pool
  • Suan Luang Rama IX park. 350 rai (56 ha) on a former mine, the largest park in the province, busy with runners and football and volleyball games in the evenings
  • Khao Rang viewpoint. On the province’s top-10 list alongside Old Town
Pink and white Sino-Portuguese shophouses on Soi Rommanee

Who Phuket Town suits

  • People who want a provincial hospital and private clinics in one town. Vachira Phuket Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Phuket (230 beds) are in Talat Yai, with three more private hospitals in Rassada and Wichit
  • Families whose child will go to school in town. Talat Yai has Phuket Wittayalai (2,921 pupils in 2020), Satree Phuket (2,794) and Anuban Phuket (2,046), and the international HeadStart and Oak Meadow are next door in Wichit
  • People who get around town by bus. The free Dragon Line loops the Old Town every 30 minutes from 07:00 to 19:00, and the Smart Bus from Bus Terminal 1 passes the hospitals on its way to Patong for THB 50
  • People who want the airport closer than from the south. HKT is 31.2 km, 38 minutes from Old Town, against 46-48 km from Rawai, Kata and Nai Harn
  • People who want a city flat valued below the island level. The median is THB 38,375/m² in Talat Yai and THB 30,750 in Talat Nuea against 48,250 for the island. This is a tax appraisal, not a sale price: Supalai Vista Phuket is offered from THB 2.49 million as of 2026-10-17

Who should look elsewhere

  • Anyone who wants to step out of the house onto a beach. There is no swimming beach: Saphan Hin cape is a park with a strip of shore, a monument and a sports centre. Patong is 16.1 km and Kata 15.5 km away, about 20 minutes without traffic
  • Anyone who wants a beach resort outside the window. This is a working town with rush-hour traffic, and the 20 minutes to Patong are quoted without traffic
  • Buyers after a new sea-side build. Of the 13 town projects in our register with an EIA date, 9 date from 1995-2014; the new ones, The Ten Condominium (EIA 25 March 2024) and Supalai Sense Khao Rang Phuket (29 October 2024), are still only planned
  • Families who want an international campus inside the municipality. The OPEC register lists none in the municipality; the nearest, HeadStart International School and Oak Meadow International School, are in Wichit

Beaches and the sea

Town has no swimming beach. The municipality describes Saphan Hin as a place to relax within the city, with a strip of shore, a monument and a sports centre, not a swimming beach. The nearest beaches:

Ownership type and the foreign quota are always confirmed project by project; the basics are in our freehold and leasehold guide. We do not publish rents until we have our own dated measurements.

Living in Phuket Town: schools, hospitals, shops, transport

Hospitals. This is the town’s big advantage. The municipality lists six hospitals on its site; we checked licences and addresses against Ministry of Public Health lists:

HospitalTypeWhereEmergency
Vachira Phuketstate, the Ministry’s regional hospital353 Yaowarat Road, Talat Yai24-hour hospital line, ambulance 1669
Bangkok Hospital Phuketprivate, 230 beds2/1 Hongyok Utis Road, Talat Yai24/7 emergency per its site

Provincial administration hospitalstateaddress being verifiednot verified

Private hospital beds and addresses come from the HSS licence list (2026-07-31), state hospitals from the HA accreditation data. Mission Hospital’s website currently redirects to an unrelated domain, so we only have its licence details.

Schools. The big state schools on the OBEC list are in Talat Yai: Phuket Wittayalai (secondary, 2,921 pupils in 2020), Satree Phuket (secondary, 2,794) and Anuban Phuket (kindergarten and primary, 2,046). The municipality runs six schools of its own. The OPEC register has no international schools inside the municipality; the nearest are HeadStart International School and Oak Meadow International School in Wichit, with seven more in Chalong.

Shops and markets. Central Phuket (Festival and Floresta) is in Wichit on the edge of town, open daily 10:00-22:00 (Central Phuket website), with Big C and Makro nearby on OpenStreetMap. Inside the municipality the map shows 12 supermarkets, 5 malls and 8 markets as of 2026-10-17, including the municipal fresh market on Ranong Road in Talat Nuea. On Sundays from 16:00 to 22:00 the Lard Yai walking street market runs in Old Town.

Transport. Town has some public transport, though not much:

  • Phuket Smart Bus from Bus Terminal 1 to Patong. Via Satree Phuket, Phuket Wittayalai, Vachira Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Phuket, THB 50. From the terminal 06:00-20:00, hourly, more often 15:30-17:30 (timetable from 2026-01-15)
  • Dragon Line. A free Old Town loop every 30 minutes, 07:00-19:00
  • Provincial electric buses. Per TAT (2025-07-11), a route from Saphan Hin to Central Phuket, 05:45-18:00, THB 15-40; not confirmed on the provincial administration’s site

We found no official routes or fares for the blue songthaews from the Ranong Road market to Rawai, Kata and Patong, so we do not publish them. Ride-hailing is covered in taxis in Phuket.

FAQ

Is Phuket Town the same as Phuket?

No. Phuket is the island and the province; Phuket Town is its capital on the southeast coast. Officially it is Phuket City Municipality (a city municipality since 2004) covering two subdistricts, Talat Yai and Talat Nuea, 12.6 km² in all. The suburbs of Wichit and Rassada are separate municipalities.

Is there a beach in Phuket Town?

There is no swimming beach. At Saphan Hin cape by the sea there is a park with a monument, a sports centre and a municipal swimming pool. For a swim, people drive to Patong (16.1 km, about 20 minutes) or Kata (15.5 km).

What is there to see in Phuket Old Town?

The municipality recommends the Sino-Portuguese shophouse quarter, the clock tower, the Chinese shrines of Jui Tui, Put Jaw and Sang Tham, Wat Mongkol Nimit and Saphan Hin cape. On Sundays from 16:00 to 22:00 the Lard Yai walking street market runs along Thalang Road. Our Old Town guide has a walking route.

Is Phuket Town good for families?

If schools and doctors matter most, town beats the resorts. Talat Yai has the big state schools Phuket Wittayalai, Satree Phuket and Anuban Phuket, and neighbouring Wichit has HeadStart and Oak Meadow international schools. Vachira Phuket Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Phuket are both in Talat Yai.

How much does a condo in Phuket Town cost?

Treasury valuations here are among the lowest on the island: a median of THB 38,375 per m² in Talat Yai and 30,750 in Talat Nuea, against 48,250 island-wide (snapshot 2024-08-05). That is an appraisal for taxes, not a sale price. One developer price for reference: Supalai Vista Phuket from THB 2.49 million on 2026-10-17.

How far is Phuket Town from the airport?

From Old Town to the airport is 31.2 km, 38 minutes without traffic by OSRM routing. That is closer than Rawai, Kata or Nai Harn (46-48 km) but further than the northwest beaches.

Are there international schools in Phuket Town?

Within the city municipality itself, Talat Yai and Talat Nuea, the OPEC private school register lists no international schools. The nearest, HeadStart International School and Oak Meadow International School, are in neighbouring Wichit. The city's state schools are large: Phuket Wittayalai, Satree Phuket and Anuban Phuket each had 2,000-3,000 pupils in OBEC's 2020 data.
