Where Kathu is

Kathu (กะทู้) is a subdistrict in the middle of Phuket, in the valley between Phuket Town and Patong. It is run by Kathu Town Municipality, whose boundary is the same as the subdistrict’s: 34.8 km², about 9 km from the centre of Phuket Town. The municipality describes its neighbours as Si Sunthon (Thalang) to the north, Chalong to the south, Wichit and Ko Kaeo to the east, and Patong and Kamala to the west. There is no coastline: hills surround Kathu on almost every side.

Kathu is not Kata. Kata is a beach in the southwest, in Karon subdistrict, and has its own page. From Kathu Shrine to Kata Beach is 18.7 km by road.

Addresses add another trap: Kathu District is bigger than the subdistrict. It covers three subdistricts: Kathu, Patong and Kamala. So “Kathu District” can appear in the address of a hotel on Patong Beach. The three have 60,017 registered residents, 33,243 of them in Kathu itself (DOPA, December 2025), more than Patong’s 19,638.

Kathu grew on tin. The municipality says its economy ran on tin mines and orchards from the reign of Rama III to Rama VIII, which is why it now has a mining museum and golf courses built on old mine land.

Who Kathu suits

  • Families who need an international school nearby. The OPEC register lists two international schools in the subdistrict, QSI International School Phuket and Kajonkiet International School Phuket, plus the Thai private school Kajonkiet Suksa
  • People who work or study in town. Phuket Old Town is 8 km away, about 9 minutes without traffic, and Central Phuket Floresta 5 km. On OpenStreetMap the Phuket campus of Prince of Songkla University lies inside Kathu
  • Golfers. Kathu has three courses: Phuket Country Club, Loch Palm and Red Mountain. Phuket Country Club says it has 27 holes and was built in 1989 on a former tin mine
  • Anyone who wants a hospital within ten minutes. Bangkok Hospital Phuket is 5 km away, Vachira Phuket 6 km, Patong Hospital 8 km
  • Buyers looking for something cheaper than the coast. The median Treasury valuation is THB 37,250 per m², 23% below the island median. The completed The Origin Kathu Patong starts at THB 2.29 million as of 2026-10-17

Who should look elsewhere

  • Beach people. There is no sea in Kathu. Patong Beach is 10.7 km and 13 minutes over the hill, Kata 18.7 km
  • Buyers planning short-term holiday lets. Kathu has no beaches, and Sansiri says plainly that dcondo Cove is aimed at the local market: students, people working on the island and long-term tenants
  • Anyone who dislikes rain. The municipality warns that it rains for much of the year, from late April to November, heaviest in October and November. The TMD station in Phuket Town records 2,271.5 mm a year
  • Anyone set on a sea view. The subdistrict sits in a valley that, in the municipality’s words, has hills on almost every side. Views here are more often of hills and fairways

Why the bottom of the range is so low. Seven of Kathu’s 27 buildings are blocks A to G of one older three-storey complex, Irawadee Condo, and each is valued at THB 10,500 per m². The Treasury treats every block as a separate building, so seven identical low values drag down the lower quarter. Two more buildings by the golf course are valued at 19,500 and 21,000. Without Irawadee, the median of the other 20 buildings is THB 39,250 per m². The highest are Utopia Central (72,000) and Serenity Residence (57,250).

The Treasury valuation is used for taxes and fees when a sale is registered; it is not a sale price. Our method: all residential units, with or without balcony; the median for each floor, then across the floors of each building, then across Kathu’s 27 buildings; snapshot of 2024-08-05, which is still the latest in the Treasury catalogue as of 2026-10-17.

Seasons and weather

Rainfall by month, mm

Source: TMD, 1991-2020 normals, Phuket station in town, 9 km from Kathu

Kathu has no weather station of its own; the nearest TMD station is in Phuket Town. Its normals make February the driest month (24 mm) and September the wettest (350 mm), with rain on 19-23 days a month from May to October. The municipality adds that the valley gets rain for most of the year and that Kathu Waterfall is best from July to December, when it carries more water. More in Phuket’s climate by month.

FAQ

Are Kathu and Kata the same place?

No. Kata (กะตะ) is a beach on the southwest coast, in Karon subdistrict. Kathu (กะทู้) is an inland subdistrict between Phuket Town and Patong, with no sea at all. From Kathu Shrine to Kata Beach is 18.7 km by road, about 22 minutes without traffic. The names look alike in English and even more so in Russian, so check the Thai spelling or the map before you book.

Where is Kathu on the map of Phuket?

In the middle of the island, west of Phuket Town. According to the municipality, Kathu borders Si Sunthon (Thalang) to the north, Chalong to the south, Wichit and Ko Kaeo to the east, and Patong and Kamala to the west. It sits in a valley with hills on almost every side.

Is Kathu District the same as Kathu?

Not quite. Kathu District (amphoe) is one of Phuket's three districts and covers three subdistricts: Kathu, Patong and Kamala, with 60,017 registered residents in December 2025. That is why a Patong beach hotel can have "Kathu District" in its address. This page is about Kathu subdistrict, run by Kathu Town Municipality.

How far is Kathu from Phuket airport?

32.6 km from HKT airport to Kathu Shrine in the centre of the subdistrict, about 36 minutes without traffic according to OSRM on OpenStreetMap data. That is closer than Patong (37.3 km) because you do not have to cross the hill. Allow more time at rush hour.

Which schools are in Kathu?

The Ministry of Education private school register (OPEC) lists three schools in Kathu District, all in Kathu subdistrict: QSI International School Phuket, Kajonkiet International School Phuket and the Thai-curriculum Kajonkiet Suksa. State schools on the OBEC list include Kathu Wittaya (grades 7-12, 1,016 pupils in 2020), Thai Rath Wittaya 29, Ban Bang Thong and Wat Ket Ho.

Where is the nearest hospital to Kathu?

There is no licensed inpatient hospital in Kathu itself. The nearest are Bangkok Hospital Phuket (private, 5 km, about 6 minutes), Vachira Phuket (state, 6 km, 7 minutes) and Patong Hospital (state, 8 km, 9 minutes). Distances are from Kathu Shrine by OSRM.

How much does a condo in Kathu cost?

Market prices depend on the project: The Origin Kathu Patong starts at THB 2.29 million and dcondo Cove Phuket at THB 1.99 million, according to the developers on 2026-10-17. To compare areas, use the Treasury valuation: the median across 27 Kathu buildings is THB 37,250 per m², against THB 48,250 for the island. It is used for taxes and fees, not as a sale price.

What is there to see in Kathu?

The municipality lists Kathu Waterfall next to Loch Palm golf club, Bang Wad reservoir, the Phuket Mining Museum (THB 100 for foreigners, 09:00-16:00) and Kathu Shrine, where, it says, Phuket's Vegetarian Festival began. They are all within 2-5 km of each other.
