Where Patong is and what it covers

Patong (ป่าตอง) is a subdistrict (tambon) of Kathu district on Phuket’s west coast. It is governed by Patong Town Municipality, whose boundaries match the subdistrict: 16.4 km² wrapped around Patong Bay. Hills of 200-400 m enclose the bay on the north, east and south, and the only flat land is the strip behind the beach (municipality description).

The municipality lists its neighbours as Kamala and Kathu to the north, Kathu to the east, Karon to the south and the Andaman Sea to the west. It has seven communities, including Ban Kalim and Hat Patong, so listings that say “Kalim” or “Tri Trang” are also in Patong.

DOPA records 19,638 registered residents and 16,694 registered house addresses for December 2025. The real population in high season is larger: tourists and foreigners on long-stay visas are rarely entered in Thai house registers.

Who Patong suits

  • People who shop on foot. The municipality describes Patong as a business and entertainment centre. OpenStreetMap shows the Jungceylon and Central Patong malls, a Big C supermarket and 96 convenience stores in the subdistrict (Overpass export, 2026-10-17)
  • People who want a hospital and town close at hand. The government Patong Hospital is in the district (57 Sai Nam Yen Road), Phuket Old Town is 15.1 km, 17 minutes away, and the airport is 37.3 km, 43 minutes, closer than from Karon (43 km) or Kata (46 km)
  • Buy-to-let condo buyers. The Treasury register lists 44 residential condominiums in Patong, more than any other subdistrict on the island, and EIA approvals came through in 2024 for The Forest Patong Residence (21 October 2024) and Phirak Condominium Patong (4 December 2024). We do not publish rents
  • People who come for Bangla Road. The municipality rebuilt it as a pedestrian street and itself calls it the centre of Patong’s evening entertainment

Who should skip Patong

  • Anyone who needs quiet nights. Bangla’s bars and clubs run late and the centre is densely built: hills of 200-400 m close in on three sides and leave only a narrow strip by the sea. Hillside homes and the edges near Kalim and Tri Trang are calmer, but you will need your own transport
  • Swimmers who want an empty sea. The municipality lists banana boats, parasailing, windsurfing and jet skis on Patong Beach. It is quieter at Tri Trang, 3 km along Muen Ngoen Road, and at Kalim at the north end of the bay. From May to October the west coast takes the swell
  • Parents looking for an international school in Patong itself. The municipality runs four institutions, a school, two kindergartens and an early childhood centre, all teaching in Thai. The OPEC register (2026-10-17) has no licensed international school in Patong; the nearest, QSI and Kajonkiet, are over the hill in Kathu subdistrict
  • Buyers focused on price per square metre. The median condo valuation of THB 53,750/m² is above the island median (THB 48,250) and Rawai (THB 51,500), and individual units in The Baycliff Patong are valued up to THB 88,000/m²

Patong’s beaches

BeachWhat Patong Municipality says
Patongwhite sand, almost 3 km, crescent bay; moderate waves and a gently shelving seabed, good for swimming; water sports; hit by the tsunami of 26 December 2004, now has a tsunami warning system and regular evacuation drills
Kalimsmall beach north of Patong, sand mixed with pebbles, rocks and coral reef; surfers come when the wind is up; less developed than Patong
Tri Trangabout 3 km from Patong along Muen Ngoen Road, quiet with white sand; snorkelling on the reef, swimming at high tide
Northern end of Patong Beach with longtail boats
The north end of Patong Beach, looking towards Kalim

The municipality’s description is not tied to a season. From May to October the southwest monsoon blows across the Andaman Sea (TMD) and the west coast, Patong included, takes the swell. In those months go by the flags and lifeguards, explained in what a red flag means on Phuket beaches. For sheltered bays in the wet season, see calm beaches.

FAQ

Is Patong a good place to live with kids?

Some things work in its favour: the government Patong Hospital is in the district, the municipality runs schools and kindergartens, and there is a large shopping mall. Against that, Bangla Road, which the municipality itself calls the hub of Patong nightlife, sits in the middle of town, and Patong has the densest condo stock on the island (44 buildings in the Treasury register). Families who want quiet usually look at Kata and Karon.

Karon or Patong: which is better?

It depends on why you are coming. Patong is closer to the airport (37 km against 43) and to Phuket Town, has the hospital and big shops, and is loud at night. Karon is quieter and its beach is longer, a little over 3 km and the island's second largest according to the municipality, but the same municipality warns that waves and wind there are fairly strong. The two are 9 km apart, about 11 minutes by car.

How far is Patong from Phuket Airport?

37.3 km by road, about 43 minutes without traffic according to OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data. Without a taxi you can take the Phuket Smart Bus on its airport, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai route for THB 100 per ride as of October 2026. Evenings and high season add time on the hill road.

Can you swim at Patong Beach?

Patong Municipality describes the waves as moderate and the seabed as gently shelving, which is why the beach is popular for swimming. The same water is shared with banana boats, parasailing and jet skis. From May to October the southwest monsoon hits the west coast, so in those months only swim where and when the lifeguards allow it.

Where is the hospital in Patong?

Patong Hospital, run by the Ministry of Public Health, is at 57 Sai Nam Yen Road, phone 076-342633. The province's main hospital, Vachira Phuket with 650 beds, is in Phuket Town, 13 km or about 15 minutes away without traffic.

What is Bangla Road?

Bangla Road runs inland from the middle of Patong Beach. The municipality has turned it into a walking street where bars and clubs open in the evening and calls it the centre of Patong nightlife. If you are renting, check how close you are to Bangla: it is the main source of late-night noise.

How much is a condo in Patong?

Market prices depend on the project, and we show developers' prices with a date: for example, units at BRISA Patong start from THB 3.9 million as of October 2026. For comparing areas there is the Treasury valuation: a median of THB 53,750 per m² across 44 Patong buildings against THB 48,250 for the whole island. This is a valuation for taxes and transfer fees, not a sale price.
