How to get a taxi in Phuket without overpaying

Grab and Bolt show the fare before you ride, tuk-tuks need haggling. We compared ride types, official airport taxi rates and the 100-baht Smart Bus.

In Phuket, “taxi” mostly means an app. Grab and Bolt cover the whole island and inDrive is available in Thailand. Alongside them you still have tuk-tuks, motorbike taxis, songthaews and buses. Below is what we could verify on operator websites on 17 October 2026, and what we could not.

A common complaint: Bolt quotes 300 baht for Karon to Patong, a 7.7 km drive. Usually the app has picked a higher category and Economy sits further down the list. The other reason is surge pricing in the evening and during downpours.

How to book Grab or Bolt in Phuket

Both apps work the same way and need a phone number to sign up (see buying a Thai SIM card). Then:

  1. Allow location access: the pickup point fills in automatically, and you can adjust it or pick your hotel from the list
  2. Enter the destination and check the pin on the map, since beaches and hotels often share similar names
  3. Scroll through every category, compare fares, then choose how to pay
  4. Once confirmed, match the plate, car model and driver photo with the app
  5. Message the driver through the in-app chat: in Grab the driver sees your name and photo, not your phone number

The cheapest category is not always at the top. Department of Land Transport (DLT) rules make apps list metered taxis first, then electric cars where available, and only then the remaining categories from cheapest to most expensive.

During a Grab ride you have an emergency button and Share My Ride, which shows your live location to friends or family. Grab also allows trips to other provinces, priced by distance. For a day out with stops, Grab offers Rent, a car with driver for up to 4 hours, available only in some cities; check the app for Phuket.

Where Grab and Bolt pick up at the airport

According to the airport (AOT) website, the Grab pickup point is at Entrance 1 on the ground floor, arrivals area, operating 06:00-00:00. Collect your bags, walk into the arrivals hall, book in the app and head to Entrance 1. Bolt takes rides to and from the airport, but AOT lists no dedicated Bolt pickup point, so agree a meeting spot with the driver in the chat. inDrive is not on the airport transport list. Official taxi and minivan counters are in the table below.

Yes, with a condition. A 2021 ministerial regulation on ride-hailing cars, published in the Royal Gazette, lets a private car be re-registered as a ride-hailing vehicle and carry passengers through a DLT-certified app. Fares for these trips are set by the Minister of Transport. A ride is legal once the driver has re-registered the car to DLT requirements; some drivers still use unconverted private cars.

A DLT notice of 30 September 2021 lists what the app must show the passenger:

  • Route, distance, travel time and fare before the trip
  • Driver’s name, licence number and vehicle details
  • Live car location, chat and calls without revealing personal numbers
  • An emergency help button, ratings and complaints
  • Trip history with date, addresses, distance and fare

The practical rule: only get into a car whose plate matches the app, and say no to “let’s turn off the app, cash is cheaper”. Without an in-app booking you lose both the fixed fare and the platform’s protection.

On insurance: every car carries compulsory insurance (Por Ror Bor), which covers injuries to people in a crash, passengers included. A private car’s voluntary policy may not cover commercial carriage if the car has not been re-registered, so anything beyond the compulsory cover depends on the driver.

How not to overpay

  • Compare Grab and Bolt before every ride
  • Check the Bolt category: Economy and Bolt are different prices for the same trip
  • Agree the tuk-tuk fare before getting in, using the app price as your benchmark
  • Carry small notes: drivers often cannot change 1,000 baht
  • Use the Smart Bus along the west coast: 100 baht between any stops
  • Never leave your passport with a driver or as a deposit

If a driver suggests a “quick stop” at a shop or says your beach is “closed”, be careful. See common Phuket scams.

Tuk-tuks, motorbike taxis and songthaews

Fares for these are set by transport authorities, but we could not open the tables on the Phuket Land Transport Office website, so we do not quote them. Until we verify them, numbers from chats can mislead. The rule is simple: the price is named and accepted before you ride.

Phuket Smart Bus

The Smart Bus links the airport with Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and Rawai for 100 baht flat. Route 2 from the town bus terminal to Patong is 50 baht, and the Dragon Line in town is free. Pay by contactless card, QR or cash; children under 6 ride free. Timetable and airport stops are in our Phuket Airport guide.

Counter fares published on the airport (AOT) website, October 2026:

Rawai is cheaper than Kata even though it is further: that is not a typo, it is how the AOT fare card (Minibus-Taxi) lists it.

Paying

Everyone takes cash in baht. Grab takes cards; the Smart Bus takes contactless cards and QR. How foreigners can pay by QR is covered in QR payments in Thailand. If you plan to ride yourself, first read which licence you need for a scooter; for a car, see our Phuket car rental guide on licences, insurance and airport desks.

FAQ

What is the best way to get around Phuket without a scooter?

Ride-hailing apps: Grab and Bolt show the fare, route and car before you book, and Grab takes cash or card. Tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis work for short hops, but agree the price before you get in. The Smart Bus is the cheapest option along the west coast.

Why is Bolt so expensive between Karon and Patong?

Bolt has five categories in Phuket and may preselect a pricier one; scroll down for Economy. Fares also rise at peak times and in heavy rain, so waiting 10-15 minutes or checking Grab often helps. The road distance is only 7.7 km.

How much is a tuk-tuk in Phuket?

We could not verify an official tuk-tuk fare table from the Department of Land Transport, so we do not quote numbers. The driver names a price and you agree it before the ride. Check the same trip in Grab or Bolt first and use it as your benchmark.

Grab or Bolt in Phuket?

Both quote upfront. Grab has more services: cars, motorbikes, vans for up to 10, and bookings up to 90 days ahead. Bolt's Economy category is often cheaper. Keep both apps and compare before you book.

Can I prebook a ride to Phuket Airport?

Yes. Grab Advance Booking works from 90 days to 75 minutes before pickup, handy for early flights. From the south of the island the drive is about an hour without traffic, so leave a buffer.

Where is the Grab pickup point at Phuket Airport?

According to AOT, the Grab pickup point is at Entrance 1 on the ground floor in the arrivals area, operating 06:00-00:00. Book in the app once you have your bags, set the pickup to Entrance 1 and check the plate before getting in. Bolt also serves the airport, but AOT lists no dedicated Bolt pickup point.

Is Grab legal in Thailand?

Yes. A 2021 ministerial regulation lets private cars be re-registered as ride-hailing vehicles that work through apps certified by the Department of Land Transport (DLT). A ride is legal when the driver has re-registered the car to DLT requirements (DLT notice of 30.09.2021), and some drivers still use unconverted private cars. A private car's voluntary insurance may not cover commercial carriage, while compulsory insurance (Por Ror Bor) covers injured people either way. Check that the car and plate match the app.

Do Grab or Bolt cars come with a child seat?

Standard Grab and Bolt cars arrive without one, and we found no child-seat category in either service's Phuket listings. If you travel with a small child, book a transfer with a seat in advance or bring your own booster.
