Everything below comes from the websites of Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Thai embassies, checked on 17 October 2026. Thai visa rules changed twice in 2026, and each embassy adds its own details: fee and currency, statement period, extra documents. Before you apply, open the page of the embassy that will handle your application.
What the DTV is and who it suits
The Destination Thailand Visa launched in July 2024, the date on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs infographic. The Royal Thai Embassy in Budapest describes it as a special type of tourist visa: it lets you stay in Thailand for long periods, but it does not let you work for a Thai employer.
You can apply under one of three purposes:
- Workcation. Digital nomads, remote employees, freelancers and “foreign talent”. Your employer or clients must be outside Thailand.
- Thai soft power. People enrolled in courses and programmes: Muay Thai, Thai cooking, sports training, medical treatment, seminars, music festivals (list from the MFA infographic).
- Family of a DTV holder. Spouse and children under 20.
Who should look elsewhere: anyone who wants a job with a Thai company, plans to run a business with staff, or wants to put a child in school on a parent’s visa. The Budapest embassy says plainly that the DTV is not meant for long-term relocation and that children studying in Thailand need a Non-ED visa.

Where to apply
As a rule, you apply through the Thai e-Visa system to the Thai embassy or consulate that covers the country where you are a citizen or hold permanent residence. Since 31 August 2026 you have to prove permanent residence in that country. The Royal Thai Embassy in London, for example, accepts UK indefinite leave to remain or Irish long-term residency.
This closes the old route of flying to a neighbouring country and applying from there. Applying in Vientiane, Penang or another nearby city no longer works unless you hold residence status in that country.
What changed in 2026
New documents from 31 August 2026. Thailand’s Department of Consular Affairs announced the change on 28 August. The old “document indicating current location” was replaced by proof of permanent residence, and a police clearance certificate became mandatory for every applicant. The London embassy accepts certificates issued within 6 months of the application date, such as an ACRO certificate. Applications filed before 00:00 on 31 August (Thai time) are processed under the old rules.
Visa exemption cut to 30 days from 15 September 2026. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), 60 countries and territories now get a 30-day visa exemption instead of the previous 60 days. If you want more than a month, the DTV has become one of the main options. For the details, see how many days you can stay in Thailand without a visa and whether you can extend a visa exemption stamp. Border runs are covered separately in visa runs in 2026.
Documents
The standard e-Visa list for all three purposes:
- passport
- photo taken within the last 6 months
- proof of permanent residence in the country where you apply
- bank statement for the last 3 months with a balance of at least THB 500,000 or equivalent, or a sponsorship letter
- police clearance certificate
Plus documents for your purpose:
| Purpose | What to add |
|---|---|
| Workcation | employment contract or letter from an employer outside Thailand, or a freelancer portfolio |
| Soft power | proof of enrolment or a clinic’s appointment letter. For Muay Thai, the Consulate-General in Los Angeles asks for a letter from the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) and documents from a SAT-certified gym |
| Family | the main holder’s DTV and proof of relationship |
Embassies can ask for more. Some want certified English translations of documents in other languages, and a consular officer may call you for an interview.
How to apply: step by step
- Check where you can apply: you need proof of permanent residence in that country
- Gather documents: order the police clearance early enough to stay within your embassy’s validity window (6 months in London)
- Apply at thaievisa.go.th: choose the DTV and your purpose, upload documents and submit
- Pay the fee the way your embassy specifies once the application is accepted
- Wait for the decision: processing times differ by embassy and are listed on each mission’s page
- Travel: the 180 days run from each entry
How much it costs
| Item | Amount as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| MFA base fee | THB 10,000 |
| Royal Thai Embassy, Washington | USD 400 |
| Royal Thai Embassy, Budapest | EUR 350 |
| Extension of stay at Immigration | general fee THB 1,900 per application |
The Immigration Bureau lists a general fee of THB 1,900 for extending a temporary stay. We did not find a separate DTV rate on official pages, so confirm at the immigration office before you go.
The visa fee is not refunded whatever the outcome. Translations, notarisation and the police check are extra and depend on your country.
Extensions and re-entry
The first 180 days start on the day you enter. You can extend by another 180 days once, at the Immigration Bureau: in Bangkok that is Government Center B, Chaengwattana Soi 7, or through immigration.go.th, according to the Royal Thai Embassy in Ho Chi Minh City. After 180 + 180 days you must leave Thailand and enter again on the same visa while it is valid.
You can also leave earlier: the visa is multiple-entry, and every new entry gives you a fresh 180 days.
Working on a DTV: what is allowed
Allowed: remote work for an employer outside Thailand and freelancing for foreign clients.
Not allowed: getting a work permit, working for companies in Thailand, or taking freelance work from Thai clients. That is the Budapest embassy’s own wording.

What we could not find in official sources
- A minimum age for applicants. Many sites say “20 or older”, but on MFA and embassy pages the number 20 appears only in “children under 20”. So we do not list an age requirement.
- A separate extension fee for the DTV. There is only the Immigration Bureau’s general fee shown above.

FAQ
Who is eligible for a DTV visa in Thailand?
Three groups: remote workers, digital nomads and freelancers whose employer or clients are outside Thailand; people joining Thai soft-power activities such as Muay Thai, Thai cooking, sports training, medical treatment or seminars; and the spouse and children under 20 of a DTV holder. The Royal Thai Embassy in Budapest calls it a special type of tourist visa: you can stay long, but you cannot work for a Thai employer.
How much money do I need for a DTV?
The e-Visa requirements list a bank statement for the last 3 months showing a balance of at least THB 500,000 or the equivalent, or a sponsorship letter. Some embassies list only the bank statement, so check your embassy's page. The amount did not change with the August 2026 update.
How much does the DTV cost?
The base fee set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is THB 10,000, but each embassy charges in its own currency: USD 400 in Washington and EUR 350 in Budapest as of October 2026. The fee is not refunded if the application is refused.
How long can I stay in Thailand on a DTV?
Up to 180 days per entry. You can extend that stay once by another 180 days at the Immigration Bureau. After 360 days you have to leave and re-enter on the same visa while it is still valid, and the visa itself lasts 5 years.
Can I apply for a DTV while I am in Thailand?
Applications are decided by Thai embassies and consulates abroad, and since 31 August 2026 you must attach proof of permanent residence in the country where you apply. A tourist in Thailand cannot show that for Thailand, so plan to apply from the country where you are a citizen or hold permanent residence.
Is it hard to get a DTV now?
The paperwork got heavier on 31 August 2026: proof of permanent residence replaced the old proof of current location, and a police clearance certificate became mandatory. Applying from a third country where you only visit, for example Laos or Malaysia, no longer works without residence status there. The money and purpose requirements stayed the same.
Can I work in Thailand on a DTV?
Only remotely, for an employer or clients outside Thailand. A DTV does not come with a work permit, and working for Thai companies or freelancing for Thai clients is not allowed, as the Royal Thai Embassy in Budapest puts it.
Can my family come with me on a DTV?
Yes. The spouse and children under 20 of a DTV holder can get a DTV as dependants with the main holder's visa and proof of relationship. For a child attending school in Thailand, embassies point to a separate Non-ED visa.
