What this market is and how it differs from the others

Lard Yai (หลาดใหญ่, “big market”; in reviews Phuket Sunday Walking Street or Lard Yai Market) is the Sunday market in Phuket Old Town, in Talat Yai subdistrict. Phuket City Municipality says the Sunday walking street runs on Sundays only, from 16:00 to 22:00, while the Old Town itself can be explored free all day. OpenStreetMap data describes the same street as a night market that is closed to cars on Sundays.

On other days of the week Thalang Road is an ordinary street. Some travel texts describe the market as daily, which is wrong. The name Phuket Weekend Market turns up both for Lard Yai (Commons captions its photos that way) and for the Naka market. The island’s other markets (Naka, Chillva, Banzaan) keep their own schedules, which our Phuket night markets overview collects. The quarter and its buildings are covered on the Phuket Old Town page.

What to see and eat

According to Thai Holiday Guide the street has:

  • Food. Southern Thai street food: grilled skewers, noodles, regional desserts and fresh fruit. Most people eat standing or walking
  • Crafts and clothing. Handicrafts, souvenirs and clothes
  • Stages. Occasional music and dance on small stages
  • Facades. The market runs along a street of Sino-Portuguese shophouses, which are easy to see in daylight until 17:00-18:00

Allow at least an hour to walk the street, as Thai Holiday Guide advises. The stalls change and there is no fixed vendor list.

What to do in the rain

The market is on the street, and the municipality says nothing about weather cancellations. On a rainy Sunday evening check whether stalls have opened, on site or with your hotel. If there is no market, spend the evening in the cafes and museums of the Old Town; the municipality does not publish museum hours, so check on site.

Safety

  • Crowds. After 18:00 the street is full: keep your phone and wallet in a closed pocket and keep an eye on children
  • Change. Check your change and the final amount before paying
  • Traffic. Outside market hours the Old Town streets are ordinary, with cars and scooters
  • Shrines. If you step into a shrine on the way, cover shoulders and knees

What to bring

  • Cash in small baht notes
  • A bag with closed pockets
  • An umbrella or rain jacket from May to October
  • Covered clothing or a scarf for shrines

Who it suits and who should skip it

  • Suits. Anyone who wants street food and souvenirs on a Sunday evening, couples and families with children, and anyone who likes the Old Town lit up
  • Skip. Anyone in town on another day of the week, anyone who dislikes crowds after 18:00, and anyone after nightclubs: nightlife is in Patong

What is nearby

The quarter is covered on the Phuket Old Town page; Wat Chalong is 9.8 km away and the Big Buddha 15 km. The island’s other night markets are in our overview.

Children are welcome: entry is free and the street is closed to cars. OpenStreetMap tags wheelchair access as limited, and the street is full of people after 18:00, so with a pushchair 16:00-17:00 is easier. Keep children close and off the neighbouring roads.
