What you will see

The Phuket provincial website describes Promthep Cape (Laem Phromthep, แหลมพรหมเทพ) as a high rocky cape at the island’s southernmost point, which locals call the “Cape of God”. Steps lead to the top, and from there you see clear water and Koh Kaew Pitsadarn island. To the right of the cape a road leads to Nai Harn beach.

TAT Newsroom (2021) adds that the cape has a lighthouse with an outdoor terrace, from which Ko Phi Phi and Ko Racha Yai and Racha Noi are visible on a clear day, and that sunset is a particularly popular time to visit. The provincial website says the sunset at Promthep is the most beautiful in Phuket, better on clear sunny days.

Opening hours and how to spend your time

We found no official hours: they are not confirmed as of 18 Oct 2026, and neither the provincial website nor TAT gives them. Neither describes a gate or a timetable.

  • Before sunset. Walk the viewing area and the steps, look at the islands if the sky is clear
  • At sunset. TAT calls sunset a particularly popular time, so come earlier
  • After sunset. The way down and the drive back are in the dark, so keep a torch on your phone

Season and weather

A clear sunset is likelier in the dry months. By TMD normals December to March brings 24-82 mm of rain and 3-10 rain days a month, while September and October bring 336-350 mm and 22-23 days out of 30.

PeriodWhat to expect
December-Marchless rain, the sunset is more often visible, calmer swell
Aprilhot, rains begin
May-Octoberrain and swell, cloud can hide the sunset
Novemberfewer rains, sunset already about 18:04

More in Phuket weather by month.

Getting there and how long it takes

The provincial website says the cape is 7 km from Rawai Beach: drive south, turn left at the first junction and follow the road up the hill.

Fees

We found no official entry fee. Thai Post reported on 22 May 2026 that at the stairs to the tip a young local man was charging tourists THB 100 each for the right to go down and photograph the cape, and that Rawai municipality officers responded to a complaint. The article does not say whether an official fee exists. If you are asked to pay, ask who it is for and why, and do not hand money to anyone who cannot name a document.

  • Windmill Viewpoint. 1.4 km and about 2 minutes by road. TAT: Ya Nui beach on one side and Nai Harn bay on the other, named after a large white windmill on the hill
  • Karon Viewpoint. 7.2 km and about 9 minutes; details on our page about the Kata and Karon viewpoints. Karon municipality says tourists stop there before the sunset at Promthep
  • Nai Harn and Rawai. Beaches on either side of the cape, covered in our guides to Nai Harn and Rawai

What to do in the rain

In rain and low cloud the sunset is invisible and the rocks are slippery, so it is better to move the trip. Rainy-day ideas are in our guide to Phuket in the low season. If you want the sunset over water, look at a sunset cruise: it depends on the same sky but happens at sea.

Safety

  • Waves and rocks. Thai Post wrote on 12 May 2023 that a wave swept two tourists into the sea at the tip of the cape and one of them went missing. Rawai lifeguards searched with a jet ski and a boat. Stay back from the water’s edge, especially in swell in the rainy season
  • Steps. Steps lead to the top (provincial website), and closed shoes are safer than flip-flops on the rocks
  • Daytime heat. The open viewing area is hot by day, so take water and a cap
  • Crowds. Expect people at sunset; keep your belongings close and watch the children
  • Wild animals. If you meet monkeys, do not feed them or show food. After a bite or scratch, wash the wound with soap and water for at least 15 minutes and see a doctor (WHO)

Children

The viewing area is elevated and steps lead to it, with rocks by the water. Come before the crowds, hold small children by the hand and keep them away from the tip. More places for families are in our guide to Thailand with kids.

What to bring

  • Water and a cap if you arrive before sunset
  • Closed shoes for the steps and rocks
  • A light layer in case of wind
  • A phone with charge and a torch for the way down

Who it suits and who it does not

  • Suits: couples and groups for sunset, anyone based in south Phuket, photographers
  • Does not suit: anyone afraid of steps and rocks by the water, anyone who dislikes crowds, and visitors in the rainy season who want a guaranteed clear sky

FAQ

Thai Post reported on 22 May 2026 that a young man at the stairs to the tip was charging THB 100 per person to go down; Rawai municipality officers went to the site and took him in for questioning, and the article names no official fee. If someone asks for money, ask who it is for and why.

The rocks by the water are dangerous in waves: Thai Post reported on 12 May 2023 that a wave swept two tourists into the sea at the tip and one went missing, and Rawai lifeguards searched with a jet ski and a boat. Stay back from the water's edge, especially in the rains and in swell: TMD says the south-west monsoon blows from May to October.
