What suits which age

The age in the table is a guide: height, swimming ability and how a child copes with the journey decide. The rows are built from the limits we found on venue websites and in our own guides: sources are under the table.

AgeUsually suitableBetter postponed
Under 3An elephant sanctuary without riding, Phuket Aquarium, a calm beach, Coral Island in the morningAny 9-12 hour day: Phi Phi, Similan Islands, Racha, Krabi
3-5The same plus the Khai Islands and the kids’ zone of Splash JungleBig slides: they need 1.22 m. The Similan Islands (park closed 16 May to 14 October) and farther islands
6-11Phi Phi, Racha, James Bond Island, snorkelling in a life jacket, slides by heightOvernight stays in Khao Sok if the child copes badly with the journey
12 and overAll sea tours, the Similan Islands in season, slides, a sunset cruiseWe found no age limits for this age; watch health and weather

Evening shows and the tiger park (Fantasea, Carnival Magic, Siam Niramit, Tiger Kingdom) are kept separate: each has its own height-based tickets, hours and rules, described on its own page. The “look, don’t touch” principle for animals is covered in our guide to elephants.

Limits set by operators and venues

All figures come from venue websites and our own pages as of 18 October 2026.

  • National parks. Under the 2021 DNP regulation a child is a person aged 3 to 14 or no taller than 140 cm; children under 3 enter free. On Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo the child fee is 200 baht instead of 400 per the DNP table (edition of 2 June 2023). Details in our guide to Thailand with kids
  • Speedboats. Phi Phi operators start the child fare at 4 years, and many do not take pregnant women on speedboats (Phi Phi). We do not recommend the Similan Islands for children under 4: the day starts at dawn (Similan Islands)
  • Operator insurance. Simba Sea Trips, per its FAQ, insures guests from 3 months to 75 years old and does not insure pregnant women (the FAQ text is quoted by the Magpie aggregator)
  • Splash Jungle. The four main slides need 1.22 m and an adult; children under 12 only with a responsible adult; a life jacket for guests under 1.22 m and weak swimmers (water park guide)
  • Andamanda in Kathu. Per the park’s rules tickets are split by height, 122 cm and above and 91-121 cm; each slide has its own height and weight limits; minors are advised to stay with an adult, and you cannot bring your own life jackets
  • Elephant sanctuaries. Phuket Elephant Sanctuary welcomes guests of any age, offers electric carts for families with toddlers, and its canopy walkway is stroller-accessible. Phuket Elephant Care uses age bands: adults from 11, children 4-10, infants 0-3
  • Phuket Aquarium. Reviews differ on child concessions: free below 108 cm, or free under 3; ask at the ticket desk
  • Blue Tree. The lagoon has been closed since 1 August 2024, so there is no children’s water park there any more (what is there now)

Seasickness on the boat and in the car

Sea tours range from 15-20 minutes by boat to Coral Island and the Khai Islands to up to an hour and a half by speedboat to the Similan Islands, while Krabi and Khao Sok mean 2.5-3.5 hours by road each way (Krabi, Khao Sok).

What medical sources say. The CDC Yellow Book says children under 2 do not usually get motion sickness. Behavioural measures come first: look at the horizon, avoid reading or screens, avoid head movements, breathe at a steady pace, and sleep well the night before. On a ship avoid the places with the most motion, such as the bow. For children aged 6-12 the CDC names children’s dimenhydrinate (the doctor sets the dose), warns that many children react unexpectedly to antihistamines, and advises a trial dose before the trip. Scopolamine, including patches, is not for children: it can cause hallucinations and confusion.

How to use this on excursions:

  • For a first boat trip choose a short route: Coral Island or the Khai Islands
  • Ask for a seat toward the stern and centre of the boat with a view of the horizon, not below deck
  • Agree the medicine and dose with your paediatrician beforehand, not on the pier
  • In the rainy season waves are higher: for children who get seasick keep to short routes and calm days, with details by month in the Phuket climate

Heat and breaks

By TMD norms (1991-2020) Phuket is around 32-34 °C by day all year: 31.8 °C in October, 34.2 °C in April; humidity ranges from 69% in February to 82% in October. October brings 22.7 rainy days on average and 336 mm of rain.

HealthyChildren.org (American Academy of Pediatrics) advises for children in heat: offer water more often than the child asks; go indoors regularly to cool off and rest; dress them in loose, light-coloured clothes and use sunscreen; move heavy activity to cooler hours. Infants under 6 months are not given water: top up with breast milk or formula. Signs of heat stroke are fainting, extreme tiredness, confusion, loss of coordination, severe headache, vomiting and fast breathing, and it is an emergency. The CDC travel page notes that young children are more likely than adults to get heat illness.

How it fits into a day: an active morning, a break indoors from 11:00 to 15:00, beach or water in the evening. At the water park the park itself asks for a 10-minute rest after every 50 minutes in the water. Below are sample days; this is our scheme, not venue data.

What to do with children in the rain

  • Aquarium on Panwa. Mostly air-conditioned indoor areas, with outdoor turtle tanks: Phuket Aquarium
  • Elephant sanctuary. Open in all weather, with boots, umbrellas and raincoats provided: elephants without riding
  • Old Town. Between showers you can dash from cafes and shops into museums and shrines, as described on the Old Town page

By TMD norms there is less rain from December to March (24-82 mm a month), and 237-350 mm from May to October. For summer swimming with children, residents say the east coast is calmer; more in our guide to calm beaches.

What to take

  • A car with a car seat for a child under 6 (the rule applies to private cars, taxis are exempt) or a pre-booked transfer with a seat
  • Water, hats, sunscreen, a change of clothes
  • A swim diaper for a baby in diapers: Splash Jungle requires it
  • A motion-sickness remedy agreed with your paediatrician
  • A copy of the child’s passport for the child rate in national parks
  • A life jacket in the right size: on Phi Phi operators hand out jackets at the pier, but confirm a child’s size in advance

Who these excursions do not suit

  • Pregnant women. Many operators do not take them on speedboats; a larger boat or land-based places are better
  • Children under 4. Long sea days of 9-12 hours; short routes are better
  • Anyone who gets carsick. Krabi and Khao Sok: up to 3.5 hours of road each way
  • Children under 1.22 m who want the big slides. They have the kids’ zones

FAQ

Where can you go with kids in Phuket?

Choose by age and height: an elephant sanctuary without riding, Phuket Aquarium on Panwa, the Splash Jungle water park (check its status), and the Khai Islands or Coral Island for half a day. From 4 years you can plan Phi Phi days, but those are 9-10 hours with transfer. Evening shows and the tiger park each have their own pages.

Which Phuket excursions work with a child under 3?

Short and dry ones: an elephant sanctuary (Phuket Elephant Sanctuary welcomes any age and its canopy walkway is stroller-accessible), Phuket Aquarium and a calm beach. Coral Island is possible in the morning, about 15 minutes by boat from Rawai. National parks admit children under 3 free.

From what age can you take children to Phi Phi?

Operators start the child fare at 4 years, and the day runs 9-10 hours including transfer. For toddlers that is long: about two hours on the boat each way, an early start and heat. The national park child fee for ages 3-14 is 200 baht instead of 400 for foreigners.

How do you handle a child's seasickness on a boat?

The CDC advises starting with behaviour: watch the horizon, avoid screens, avoid the bow, sleep well, and for ages 6-12 agree an antihistamine dose with a doctor and test it before the trip. Scopolamine is not for children. For a first trip pick a short route: Coral Island or the Khai Islands.

What can you do with children in Phuket in the rain?

Phuket Aquarium is mostly indoors and air-conditioned, the elephant sanctuary runs in all weather and hands out boots, umbrellas and raincoats, and in Old Town you can dash from cafes into museums. October brings 336 mm of rain and 22.7 rainy days by TMD norms.

Which Phuket water park should I choose with children?

Splash Jungle in Mai Khao admits riders to its big slides from 1.22 m and gives the kids' zone no stated limit; check its status for October 2026 by phone. Andamanda in Kathu splits tickets by height, 122 cm and above and 91-121 cm. The Blue Tree lagoon has been closed since 1 August 2024.

How do you keep a child from overheating on a tour?

HealthyChildren.org advises offering water before the child asks, going somewhere cool often, dressing in loose light clothes and using sunscreen; infants under 6 months are not given water. Phuket sits around 32 °C by day with humidity up to 82%, so plan an active morning and an indoor break from 11:00 to 15:00.

Do children need a car seat in a taxi in Phuket?

In a private or rented car a child under 6 must be in a car seat, with a fine of up to 2,000 baht. Taxis and public transport are exempt. For long days book a transfer with a seat in advance. Details are in our guide to Thailand with kids.
