What this place is
Tiger Kingdom Phuket is a venue in Kathu where guests enter enclosures with tigers and are photographed with them. The Tiger Kingdom chain also operates in Chiang Mai, and the website tigerkingdom.com lists the Kathu (Phuket) site among its locations in 2026. According to For Tigers, the Phuket branch is the chain’s second venue with contact. The address on the Trip.com listing is 118/88 Moo 7, Kathu, Phuket.
This is an entertainment with contact with captive big cats and opinions about it differ, so this page is in two parts: how it works and what the sources say about it. The decision is yours.
A visit step by step
According to the Phuket 101 blog (2026, the author visited in person) and agencies:
- You choose a category: newborn, smallest, small, medium, big or giant tigers, and there is a cheetah too
- You wash your hands and leave your bag outside: tigers like to play with straps, flash is banned and you may not walk in alone
- You enter the enclosure with a trainer, a session of about 10 minutes
- The trainer photographs you on your phone for free, a professional photographer is available for an extra fee
- You exit and, if you like, go to the next enclosure
Everyone who enters an enclosure pays the full price, even without wanting a photo. A walk-around ticket without entering an enclosure exists.
Opening hours and how long to allow
According to the Trip.com listing on 18 October 2026 the venue is open daily 9:00-17:30. The Phuket 101 blog gives 9:00-17:00 with last entry at 16:00. We found no official page with hours, so confirm them before you go. Allow 1-2 hours for the visit: the contact itself is about 10 minutes, the rest is registration, briefing and queuing. Blogs advise arriving in the morning, when the tigers are more active.
Getting there and travel time
The venue is in Kathu, on the road between Patong and Phuket Town. Road distances from OpenStreetMap (OSRM, no traffic, 18 October 2026):
| From | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Patong centre | 5.9 km | about 7 minutes |
| Phuket Town | 8.9 km | about 11 minutes |
| Kata | 15.6 km | about 19 minutes |
| Airport | 33.9 km | about 48 minutes |
Simon Cabaret is nearby (7.1 km).
Tickets, age limits and contact rules
Prices depend on tiger size and package. We found no official dated price table, so we give no figures. The rules below follow the Phuket 101 blog and the agency Trip Thai Tour (we found no official rules on open pages):
- Under 15 or under 160 cm (adults included) may enter only with the smallest and newborn cubs
- Children under 15 come only with a paying adult
- Children under 2 enter the smallest-cub enclosures free
- The cheetah has a minimum age of 4 and a height of 110 cm
- Bags and loose items stay outside, flash is banned
What the sources say about the tigers’ welfare
Animal protection organisations. World Animal Protection in February 2026: “if you can ride, hug, or have a selfie with a wild animal, please don’t, and don’t support these activities”. The organisation wrote this after the deaths of Tiger Kingdom tigers in Chiang Mai and added that such facilities have “zero benefit for conserving wild tigers” and “provide no educational benefit”. In its description of the Phuket branch, For Tigers writes that tiger interactions often involve unnatural behaviours and environments, and advises looking for experiences without contact.
What happened in 2026. According to World Animal Protection, between 8 and 19 February 2026, 72 tigers died at Tiger Kingdom’s Mae Taeng (51) and Mae Rim (21) sites in Chiang Mai. The authorities ruled out bird flu and found canine distemper together with mycoplasma. The sites were closed for disinfection and survivors were quarantined. Those sites are not in Phuket, and the reports we found do not mention the Kathu branch.
What the venue and visitors say. The guides, as described by Phuket 101, say the tigers are not sedated: they are captive-born, well fed and sleep by day, becoming more active towards evening. The blog author wrote that the animals looked groomed and the enclosures were clean. We found no independent assessment of conditions in Phuket itself.
What we could not verify. Conditions outside the guest enclosures, veterinary oversight and vaccination, breeding, what happens to adult tigers, and the official visitor rules.
Alternatives without big cat contact
- Phuket Aquarium at Cape Panwa: indoors, works in rain
- An elephant sanctuary without riding: watching elephants from a distance
- Phuket with kids: a selection of places with no big cat contact
What to do in rain
The enclosures are outdoors. What the venue does in heavy rain is not stated on open pages, so mornings are safer in the wet season, and it is worth phoning the venue before you go (the Phuket 101 blog gives 076 323 311).
Safety
- A guest in an enclosure is next to a big cat: follow the trainer, stay quiet, do not run
- World Animal Protection warns that such facilities put staff and visitors at risk of injury and disease
- Hands are washed before entering and bags are left outside (per Phuket 101)
Who it suits and who it does not
- Suits. Anyone who has consciously decided that contact is acceptable and is ready for the age and height rules. Adults 160 cm or taller
- Does not suit. Anyone against contact with captive big cats. Children under 15 (only the smallest cubs). Anyone who wants exact prices and rules from an official source: we did not find them
FAQ
Is Tiger Kingdom in Phuket open in 2026?
Yes, Trip.com lists it open daily 9:00-17:30 on 18 October 2026, and the chain's website tigerkingdom.com lists the Kathu (Phuket) site among its locations in 2026. We found no official page with hours and prices, so check the hours with the venue before you go.
Is it ethical to go to Tiger Kingdom in Phuket?
There is no single answer and the decision is yours. World Animal Protection and For Tigers advise against supporting contact with captive big cats. Visitors and the venue's guides describe well-kept tigers in blogs, but we found no independent assessment of conditions in Phuket.
Is it true that the tigers are sedated?
We could not verify this. The venue's guides, as described by the Phuket 101 blog, say they are not: the tigers are captive-born, well fed and sleep by day, becoming more active towards evening. Animal protection groups call such conditions unnatural in principle.
What happened to Tiger Kingdom's tigers in 2026?
According to World Animal Protection, in February 2026 the authorities confirmed the deaths of 72 tigers at the chain's Mae Taeng and Mae Rim sites in Chiang Mai province: tests found canine distemper and mycoplasma. The sites were closed for disinfection. We found no mention of the Phuket branch in these reports.
Can I bring children?
According to descriptions of the venue on agency sites and the Phuket 101 blog, children under 15 or under 160 cm enter only with the smallest cubs, and children under 15 only with a paying adult. Confirm the rules with the venue, we did not find them on open official pages.
How much is it and how long does it take?
The price depends on tiger size and package. We found no official dated price table, so we give no figures. Allow 1-2 hours for the ride and the session: contact itself takes about 10 minutes.
What are the alternatives without contact with big cats?
In Phuket you can visit Phuket Aquarium at Cape Panwa or an elephant sanctuary without riding. For children without big cat contact, the aquarium and water parks work.
