What this place is

Phuket Aquarium (Thai: สถานแสดงพันธุ์สัตว์น้ำภูเก็ต) is on Cape Panwa in the south-east of the island, in Wichit subdistrict of Mueang Phuket. It is run by the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC), a research unit of Thailand’s Department of Fisheries. The centre was founded in 1966 under an agreement between Thailand and Denmark after a Thai-Danish expedition (OceanExpert directory). Address: 51 Sakdidej Road, Wichit.

One caveat: the official site phuketaquarium.org, listed in older directories, did not open on 18 October 2026. The hours, exhibits and rules below come from reviews by Thai Holiday Guide (July 2026) and Phuket Expat Guide (May and September 2026), so confirm them at the entrance.

Do not confuse it with Aquaria Phuket, a different, commercial aquarium in the Central Phuket Floresta mall (floor B1, daily 10:30-19:00 per the Tagthai page). This guide is about the government centre on Panwa.

What you will see

  • The tunnel. A walk-through tunnel where rays, large fish and small reef sharks swim overhead (Thai Holiday Guide)
  • Andaman reef fish. Clownfish, groupers and moray eels (Thai Holiday Guide)
  • Ray pools. Stingrays and spotted rays, and eagle rays when they are in residence (Phuket Expat Guide)
  • Touch pool. Under staff supervision you can touch starfish and sea cucumbers; it is the most popular spot for children under 10 (Phuket Expat Guide)
  • Sea turtle rehabilitation. Outdoor tanks behind the main building, included in the standard ticket. The turtles are being treated, so what you see changes; Phuket Expat Guide suggests asking staff about turtles in the November to February nesting season

Thai Holiday Guide notes that the centre rescues injured dolphins and dugongs found around the island, but does not say they are shown to visitors.

Opening hours and how to spend the time

Both reviews give daily hours of 08:30 to 16:30, weekends included. Last entry, per Phuket Expat Guide, is usually 30-45 minutes before closing. Older directories give 09:00-17:00, which is probably out of date.

How long to allow: per Phuket Expat Guide, 1.5-2 hours for adults and 2-2.5 hours for families with small children. There is a small car park on site.

We do not quote the entry price: two reviews give noticeably different sums, and we found no official price list. This is a government facility, so check prices at the ticket desk.

Getting there

Cape Panwa is 12.4 km and about 15 minutes from Phuket Town centre, 23.6 km and about 28 minutes from Patong, 21.1 km and about 26 minutes from Kata, and 23.1 km and about 31 minutes from Nai Harn (OSRM from OpenStreetMap coordinates, 18 October 2026). Taxis, Grab, songthaews and rental cars all go there. Show the driver the Thai name: สถานแสดงพันธุ์สัตว์น้ำภูเก็ต. If you drive a private car with a child under 6, you need a car seat (rules).

Children, heat and rain

Children. Per Thai Holiday Guide, children under 108 cm enter free; per Phuket Expat Guide, children under 3 are typically free. The reports differ, so ask at the ticket desk. The tunnel and touch pool appeal to children from 3 years (Phuket Expat Guide).

Rain and heat. Phuket Expat Guide says the indoor areas are mostly air-conditioned; the outdoor turtle tanks are open to the sky. By TMD norms (1991-2020) October in Phuket brings 336 mm of rain and 22.7 rainy days, with about 32 °C by day, so the aquarium works for a rainy or very hot hour (climate by month).

Animal welfare

The turtles you see in the outdoor tanks are wild animals under treatment, not a permanent display. The touch pool is supervised by staff, as Phuket Expat Guide writes. The sources have no rules on photography or feeding, so follow staff instructions on site.

Nearby

  • Ao Yon bay. On the east coast, which residents describe as calmer than the west in the monsoon. Details in our guide to calm beaches in Phuket
  • Phuket Old Town. 12 km and about 15 minutes away, see the Old Town guide

Who it suits and who it does not

  • Suits families with children from 3 years. The tunnel and touch pool are easy for small children
  • Suits a rainy or very hot hour. The indoor areas are mostly air-conditioned
  • Not for anyone expecting a dolphin show. The reviews describe none; this is an aquarium at a research centre
  • Not for anyone who needs an exact feeding timetable. We did not find one

Per Thai Holiday Guide (July 2026) and Phuket Expat Guide, daily from 08:30 to 16:30, with last entry 30-45 minutes before closing. Older directories give 09:00-17:00. The official site did not open, so check at the ticket desk.

What is there to see at Phuket Aquarium?

A tunnel with rays, large fish and small reef sharks, a touch pool with starfish and sea cucumbers, Andaman reef fish, and outdoor tanks where sea turtles are treated. The reviews describe no dolphin show.

Is it a government or a private aquarium?

Government. It belongs to the Phuket Marine Biological Center, a Department of Fisheries unit founded in 1966 under an agreement between Thailand and Denmark. The private Aquaria Phuket is in the Central Phuket Floresta mall and keeps different hours.
