September is the peak of the rainy season for most of Thailand. TMD says most areas get the most abundant monthly rain of the whole year, and the Gulf side is the relative exception. Below are Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) normals for nine stations, what September 2026 looked like, sea safety, national park closures and the calendar. Checked on 25 October 2026.

September weather by region: TMD normals

These are 1991-2020 normals from the TMD report; the Krabi station (48 563) has a shorter 1994-2020 record. A rainy day means 0.1 mm or more. Khao Lak uses the nearest TMD station, Takua Pa (individual beaches may differ), Pattaya the Phatthaya station, Koh Chang the Trad station on the mainland. TMD has no stations on Koh Phangan or Koh Tao, so the Ko Samui station is the nearest reference for them.

Hotel occupancy from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS) is by province, not by resort. A normal is a 30-year average, and any single year can be much drier or wetter.

How September behaves: TMD’s description and September 2026

TMD’s 3-month outlook issued on 23 July 2026 describes September from the 30-year pattern: densely abundant rain, with most areas getting the heaviest monthly rainfall of the whole year, because a low-pressure trough sits over central Thailand and some tropical cyclones dissipate near or directly over the country, especially in the east.

September 2026 was wet where the trough sat:

  • rain across Thailand 24% above normal, with the centre 69% and the east 65% above
  • the Gulf coast of the south 26% above normal and the western coast of the south 11% below
  • more than 200 mm in 48 hours in Bangkok and Samut Prakan, with prolonged flooding in places and new daily and monthly rainfall records at some stations
  • special public holidays on 28 and 29 September 2026 for Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan (TAT)
  • average temperature 0.2 °C above normal

Where to go in September

Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao. The driest of the nine stations: 117.5 mm on 15.0 days. Surat Thani province was 73.6% full in September 2025. The wet peak on Samui comes in October to December. See the Koh Samui holiday guide.

Hua Hin and Pattaya. Hua Hin gets 129.8 mm on 15.5 days. Pattaya jumps to 213.6 mm on 16.3 days, more than double August’s 91 mm. Prachuap Khiri Khan province, where Hua Hin sits, had its lowest hotel occupancy of 2025 in September, 62.3%. See Pattaya in October for what comes next.

Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Bangkok is at its wettest, 335.9 mm on 21.4 days, and a city trip needs slack in the schedule; see things to do in Bangkok. Chiang Mai gets 207.2 mm on 18.1 days, and Doi Pui peak in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park stays closed until 30 September (DNP). See the Chiang Mai guide.

Koh Chang. The Trad station records 816.4 mm on 24.8 days. Trat province was 36.2% full in September 2025, its lowest month of the year. See the Koh Chang guide.

Sea and swimming in September

TMD’s September summary says a moderate to rather strong southwest monsoon covered the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand for most of the month. Rawai municipality’s page on Nai Harn, which also mentions the neighbouring Ao Sane bay, says that in the monsoon season from May to October the waves are very strong and not suitable for swimming, and Karon municipality describes the waves at Karon Beach as fairly strong. TAT’s flag guide applies: red means do not swim, yellow means medium risk, green means calm, and a red-yellow flag marks the area with lifeguards on duty. Boat trips can be cancelled at the last minute, which is the captain’s decision.

We have no official wave heights for September. What to do if a current pulls you out is in red flags and rip currents.

National parks and islands in September

The Department of National Parks (DNP) publishes a closure table for national parks every year. The 2026 table is dated 7 January 2026 and the 2027 table is not out yet, so these are 2026 dates; confirm with your operator before booking.

FAQ

Is September a good time to visit Thailand?

For a budget trip on the Gulf side, yes: Samui gets 118 mm, the least of the nine stations. For the Andaman coast and Bangkok it is the wettest month of the year (Phuket 350 mm, Takua Pa 636 mm, Bangkok 336 mm) and flooding is a real possibility.

Is September the rainiest month in Thailand?

By TMD normals it is the wettest month at Phuket, Khao Lak (Takua Pa) and Bangkok. Chiang Mai peaks in August, Krabi and Pattaya in October, Koh Chang in July, and Samui in November (444.6 mm). TMD's own description calls September the month when most areas have their most abundant rain of the year.

Does Bangkok flood in September?

It can. In September 2026 TMD recorded more than 200 mm in 48 hours in Bangkok and Samut Prakan, with rain for the month 69% above normal in the central region, and TAT announced special public holidays on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 September 2026 for Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan because of continuing heavy rain and flooding. TAT's contact centre 1672 runs 24 hours.

Where is the best weather in Thailand in September?

Koh Samui is the driest of the nine stations (117.5 mm on 15.0 days), followed by Hua Hin (129.8 mm). The PCD lists July to September as the PM2.5 watch period for the south, so check Air4Thai. The Gulf side is not dry, only drier.

Is Phuket worth visiting in September?

Only for the price of a quiet, wet month: 350.4 mm on 21.7 days, surf on the west coast and the Similan Islands closed until 15 October. Hotel occupancy in the province was 65.84% in September 2025, the lowest month of the year, against 86.4% in January.

Is Maya Bay open in September?

No. The DNP 2026 closure table closes Maya, Losama and Loko bays on Phi Phi Leh until 30 September, and the Emerald Cave (Tham Morakot) in Hat Chao Mai National Park for the whole of September. Confirm the 2027 dates with your operator.

Are there holidays in September in Thailand?

Not for banks: the Bank of Thailand's 2027 list has no holiday between Thursday 12 August and Wednesday 13 October. Local festivals run through the month (see the table above).
