The River Kwai Bridge is at Kanchanaburi, in western Thailand. The SRT timetable calls the station Khwae Yai Bridge (Thai: สะพานแควใหญ่), and it sits 3 km by rail beyond Kanchanaburi station on the Thonburi to Nam Tok line (119 and 116 km from Thonburi in the timetable). The line belonged to the 415 km Thailand-Burma Railway, which the Imperial Japanese Army built during the Second World War using Allied prisoners of war and forced Asian labourers. The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre (TBRC) says more than 13,000 prisoners of war died, along with around 100,000 Asian labourers. By 1957 the Thai government had reopened the section from Nong Pladuk to Nam Tok, and it still runs.

Distances from DNP and the Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre: 129 km from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, then about 70 km to Erawan and about 80 km to Hellfire Pass. Joining the bridge, Hellfire Pass and Erawan in one day by public transport is unrealistic: that is our estimate from the distances and opening hours, as Hellfire Pass closes at 16:00. If you book a tour from a street stall, read our scams guide first.

The train from Bangkok

Thonburi station, also called Bangkok Noi, stands on the west bank of the Chao Phraya in Bangkok Noi district (OpenStreetMap). For these trains the 2026 SRT timetable lists fans and a toilet and no air-conditioning. The times below come from the SRT website on 24 October 2026.

258 (afternoon, return from Nam Tok)arrives 17:4014:4314:3513:00

Fares in the timetable: THB 25 to Kanchanaburi and Khwae Yai Bridge, THB 39 to Nam Tok. We did not confirm the price at the ticket office for foreign passengers. The only same-day return to Bangkok is train 258: after train 259 arrives, the timetable has no later return the same day.

On weekends and public holidays the timetable also lists a tourist train. Train 909 leaves Hua Lamphong at 06:30, reaches Kanchanaburi at 09:35 and Nam Tok at 11:30. Train 910 leaves Nam Tok at 14:25 and Kanchanaburi at 16:54 and reaches Hua Lamphong at 19:30. DNP describes it as a special tourist train for a one-day round trip. The timetable gives no fare, and SRT cancelled 909/910 on 3 and 4 October 2026 because of floods.

The closed section

According to Post Today (29 September 2026) and AEC10 News (3 October 2026), both citing SRT, the Tha Kilen to Nam Tok section was closed from 28 September 2026 because of floodwater at the Tham Krasae bridge, and train 257 ran only as far as Tha Kilen while the return trains 258 and 260 started from Tha Kilen. Tha Kilen to Wang Pho reopened on 3 October. We found no news of a full reopening to Nam Tok, and the SRT website timetable still shows the old trains. Kanchanaburi and Khwae Yai Bridge stations lie before Tha Kilen, so a day trip to the bridge is not affected by that section. Before you leave, check your train on TTS-TrainView or call SRT on 1690 (24 hours).

The bus

DNP says regular and air-conditioned buses run from the Southern Bus Terminal to Kanchanaburi every 15 minutes from 04:00 to 20:30, about 2.5 hours. Buses from Mo Chit 2 (floor 1, platform 21) towards Dan Chedi Sam Ong run from 05:00 to 19:00 and also stop at Kanchanaburi bus terminal. From there bus 8170 goes to Erawan every hour from 08:00 to 17:20. The Transport Co booking system lists a Bangkok Southern pick-up and a Kanchanaburi stop, but we did not get a fare from it, so check the price when you book. For ticketing in general see our trains and buses guide.

What to see and how long it takes

  • The bridge and Khwae Yai Bridge station. Train 257 stops here at 10:34. Check on a map how to walk from the station to the bridge and back before train 258 leaves at 14:35, which leaves 4 hours
  • TBRC museum and the war cemetery. The museum tells the story of the Thailand-Burma Railway and is fully air-conditioned. Its page says it opens daily 09:00-16:00 subject to official Thai closures, with admission THB 160 for adults and THB 80 for children aged 7-12. The page was last modified on 5 December 2022, so check the price. The museum stands by the war cemetery, about 1.5 km west of the town centre, and visitors reach it from the bus station by songtaew, motorbike taxi or samlor
  • Hellfire Pass. A free centre run by the Australian Government, open daily 09:00-16:00 and closed on 1 January, 13-15 April, three weeks in May, 5 December, 24-27 December and 31 December. The short trail to the cutting is about 500 m and takes 45-60 minutes; the long trail is 2.6 km, 1.5 hours one way, and you must carry a safety radio that the centre lends free. It is about 80 km from the town, roughly an hour by car or 1.5-2 hours by bus for around THB 60, according to the centre. The nearest train station, Nam Tok, is 20 km away
  • Erawan. A national park with the Erawan waterfall cascade. The adult foreign fee is THB 300 in the DNP table (a 2024 file, so check at the gate). The park’s welfare shop is open daily 08:00-16:30, and we found no entry hours. It is about 70 km from the town

What we could not confirm

  • The ticket-office fare for foreign passengers on the ordinary train, and the fare of tourist train 909/910
  • The bus fare from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi
  • Prices, inclusions and timing of group tours and cars with a driver
  • Opening hours and conditions for walking on the bridge itself
  • Opening hours of Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (the CWGC site blocks automated reading)
  • The date of a full reopening of the Tha Kilen to Nam Tok section

FAQ

How long does it take to get from Bangkok to the River Kwai Bridge?

By SRT train from Thonburi station it is 2 hours 35 minutes to Kanchanaburi and 2 hours 49 minutes to Khwae Yai Bridge station (train 257). DNP gives about 2.5 hours for the bus from the Southern Bus Terminal. By road DNP quotes 129 km and about 1 hour 30 minutes to Kanchanaburi.

Can I do the bridge as a day trip from Bangkok?

Yes, by ordinary train: 257 arrives at the bridge at 10:34 and 258 leaves at 14:35, which leaves about 4 hours on the ground. On a weekend the tourist train 909 reaches Kanchanaburi at 09:35 and 910 leaves at 16:54, about 7 hours. Hellfire Pass and Erawan add many kilometres, so give them an overnight stay.

How much is the train to Kanchanaburi?

The SRT timetable shows THB 25 to Kanchanaburi and to Khwae Yai Bridge and THB 39 to Nam Tok on 24 October 2026. We did not confirm what the ticket office charges a foreign passenger, so ask when you buy. The timetable gives no fare for the tourist train 909/910.

Do the trains run to Nam Tok now?

From 28 September 2026 SRT closed the Tha Kilen to Nam Tok section after floodwater reached the Tham Krasae bridge, and train 257 ran only as far as Tha Kilen while the return trains 258 and 260 started from Tha Kilen. Tha Kilen to Wang Pho reopened on 3 October 2026. We found no news of a full reopening to Nam Tok, although the SRT website timetable still lists trains to Nam Tok. Check ttsview.railway.co.th or call SRT on 1690.

Is entry to Hellfire Pass free?

Yes. The centre is funded and run by the Australian Government and has donation boxes. It is open daily from 09:00 to 16:00 and closed on 1 January, 13-15 April, three weeks in May, 5 December, 24-27 December and 31 December. The short trail is about 500 m and takes 45-60 minutes.

When is the best time to go?

TMD's 1991-2020 normals for Kanchanaburi put December, January and February at 7-18 mm of rain, and September and October at about 219 and 206 mm. March and April are the hottest, with an average maximum of 37.0 and 38.0 degrees Celsius. In the 2026 rainy season floodwater closed part of the railway to Nam Tok.

Do I need a tour?

The bridge and Kanchanaburi town are simple to reach by train or bus. A tour or a car with a driver makes sense for Hellfire Pass and Erawan, which are slow by public transport. We did not compare tour prices or inclusions, so ask the operator what stops are included and how long you get at each.
