April in Phuket is the warmest month on average and the month with the most thunderstorm days, but the rainy season starts in May. Below are the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) normals for both island stations, how the sea behaves, which islands and tours run, how to plan a hot day, Songkran in Phuket and how busy the island is. Checked on 6 November 2026.
Phuket weather in April: TMD numbers
These are 1991-2020 normals. The Phuket station is in Phuket Town in the southeast, Phuket Airport in the northwest. A rainy day is a day with 0.1 mm of rain or more.

April next to March and May
April is the turning point between the dry months and the monsoon. Figures for the town station, with Phuket province hotel occupancy for 2025 from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS):
| Month | Average high, °C | Rain, mm | Rainy days | Thunderstorm days | Humidity, % | Hotel occupancy 2025, % |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| March | 34.4 | 80.7 | 7.5 | 3.9 | 71 | 79.44 |
| April | 34.2 | 135.1 | 11.7 | 7.5 | 75 | 81.76 |
| May | 33.2 | 236.9 | 18.9 | 6.3 | 79 | 73.95 |
By our calculation April has about 1.7 times March’s rain and 57% of May’s. It rains on about four days in ten. April has the most thunderstorm days of any month at both stations, and the heaviest April day in 1991-2020, 145.7 mm at the town station, is more than the average April total of 135.1 mm. A downpour of that size can flood low streets, see Phuket flooding.
The season according to TMD
TMD puts April in the hot season, the transition between the monsoons from February to May: winds have no fixed direction, the weather is hot, sultry and generally dry, and the thunderstorms that do form are often severe. The southwest monsoon, which brings rain and waves to the west coast, TMD dates from May. In its guide to natural hazards TMD singles out April as the month when thunderstorms bring strong wind, hail, lightning and sometimes tornadoes. That is a statement for the whole country, not for Phuket in particular.
TMD’s seasonal outlook page showed only the 2026-2027 cool season on 6 November 2026, so there is no TMD outlook for April 2027 yet. Everything this page says about April 2027 describes the 1991-2020 normal, not a forecast.
Sea and beaches in April
West coast waves arrive with the southwest monsoon. The only official warning we have is from Rawai municipality: its page on Nai Harn Beach says the waves are very strong in the monsoon season, May to October, and not suitable for swimming. For April we found no official wave statistics.
The station data show a transition. In March the prevailing wind at the airport is from the east, in April from the west and northwest, and from May to October from the west. A west wind blows from the sea onto the west-coast beaches (our reading of the coast’s orientation). At the town station the mean wind speed in April, 1.5 knots, is the lowest of any month, but light wind does not guarantee flat water, because swell from farther away is not in the station data. We do not promise a calm west coast in April:
- Look at the beach flag every day: rip currents can form even with small waves, see red flags and rip currents
- Check the TMD marine forecast the evening before a boat trip
- Sheltered bays and the east coast are the fallback, see calm beaches in Phuket
- Area and beach guides: Kata, Karon, Patong, Nai Harn, Bang Tao
Islands and day trips in April
| Destination | Status in April | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Similan Islands | open until 15 May, annual closure 16 May-14 October | DNP closure table |
| Surin Islands | open until 15 May, annual closure 16 May-14 October | DNP closure table |
| Maya Bay, Phi Phi | open, annual closure 1 August-30 September | DNP closure table |
| Phang Nga Bay (Ao Phang-nga park) | open, the table lists closures of some sites only on 1 August-30 September | DNP closure table |
| Coral, Racha and Khai islands | outside national parks, no seasonal closure | Phuket islands |
The table is the DNP list for 2026 with data as of 7 January 2026; it was still the published version on 6 November 2026. There is no 2027 table, so we use the standing annual periods. Parks can change their rules, so confirm the status with the operator or the park before you book.
April is the last full month of the Similan and Surin season. If the Similans are the point of your trip, April leaves more room than the first half of May to move a day when a boat stays in port for a storm warning. Compare routes, times and prices in Phuket excursions, the Similan Islands and Phi Phi.
How to plan a hot day
At Phuket Town the average high is 34.2 °C, nights stay at 26.3 °C and humidity is 75%, against 69% in February. The record April reading of 39.2 °C is the highest of any month at that station. Nights at the airport are cooler, 24.2 °C. TMD counts thunderstorm days, not hours, so the normals cannot say which part of the day is stormy. Our suggestions:
- Do open-air sights in the morning: Big Buddha, Phuket Old Town and the viewpoints
- Keep midday for the pool, shade or an indoor plan, see what to do on a rainy day
- Choose a room with air conditioning rather than a fan: nights at Phuket Town stay at 26 °C
- Take a spare plan for each island day, because a thunderstorm can move a boat trip
- With children, choose short outings and shade, see Phuket with kids
Songkran in Phuket, 13-15 April 2027
| Date in 2027 | Event | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday 6 April | Chakri Memorial Day, bank holiday | Bank of Thailand |
| Tuesday 13 to Thursday 15 April | Songkran, bank holidays | Bank of Thailand |
TAT describes Songkran as the Thai New Year, recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity and traditionally marked by merit-making, water-pouring rituals for elders and temple visits. Today it is also a nationwide water festival.
As of 6 November 2026 TAT has not published a programme for Songkran 2027, and we found no announced Phuket events for those days. For reference, TAT’s 2026 listing named two Phuket events: the Phuket Water Festival on 11-13 April 2026 at Baan Mai Khao and Patong Beach, and Songkran at Dibuk Road, in front of Limelight Phuket and at Dragon Plaza, on 13 April 2026. In 2026 the water festival started on 11 April, two days before 13 April, the traditional first day of Songkran. Dates and venues for 2027 can differ, and we will add them once TAT announces them.
Our advice for the Songkran days, not official rules:
- Settle bank business and change money before 13 April, because banks are closed on 13-15 April 2027
- Book rooms and island tours for that week early: MOTS monthly data cannot show how busy those three days are
- Near event sites and busy streets, carry your passport, cash and phone in a waterproof pouch or leave them at the hotel
- Take Grab or Bolt instead of riding a scooter through crowds, see Phuket taxis
Crowds and hotel occupancy
MOTS counts hotel occupancy and visitors by province, not by beach. Figures for Phuket (MOTS marks 2024 and 2025 as revised):
| Month | Occupancy 2025, % | Occupancy 2024, % | Visitors 2025 | Of them foreign, % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| March | 79.44 | 81.24 | 1,150,397 | 69.1 |
| April | 81.76 | 83.94 | 1,174,215 | 73.8 |
| May | 73.95 | 75.51 | 1,118,618 | 73.1 |
April was busier than March in both years, and below January (86.41% in 2025) and February (82.08%). The share of foreign visitors in the table is our calculation. One year of monthly data cannot separate the Songkran days from the rest of April. We do not publish accommodation prices until we collect our own dated measurements.
Should you go to Phuket in April?
Go if:
- you like hot weather and have a pool, sea or shade within reach at midday
- you want the Similans or Surin before the parks close on 16 May
- you want to see Songkran at a beach resort and can plan around the crowds
- you accept that some days end in a thunderstorm
Consider another month if:
- you struggle with heat and humidity: highs of 34 °C, 39 °C at the extreme
- you want dry weather and the most predictable west coast sea, then look at March or February
- you want quiet streets and a calm hotel during 13-15 April
- you plan to ride a scooter during Songkran
The same month across the country, with Pattaya, Samui and the north, is covered in Thailand in April. What changes from May is in Phuket from May to October and Thailand in May.
FAQ
What is the weather like in Phuket in April?
Hot and increasingly stormy. TMD 1991-2020 normals give an average high of 34.2 °C, a low of 26.3 °C, 135.1 mm of rain on 11.7 days and thunderstorms on 7.5 days at Phuket Town. The airport in the north is a little cooler (33.5 °C and 24.2 °C) and a little wetter (143.7 mm on 12.9 days). Humidity is 75-79%.
Is Phuket too hot in April?
April is the warmest month on average, 29.6 °C, and the town station's highest April reading over 1991-2020 was 39.2 °C, the highest of any month. Humidity is 75%, against 69% in February, and nights stay at 26.3 °C. Plan sights for the morning and keep midday for the pool or shade.
Does it rain a lot in Phuket in April?
Not yet by monsoon standards: 135.1 mm on 11.7 days at Phuket Town, against 236.9 mm on 18.9 days in May. But April has the most thunderstorm days of the year, and the heaviest single April day in 1991-2020, 145.7 mm, is more than the average April total. TMD counts a rainy day from 0.1 mm and does not publish hours of rain, so 11.7 days does not mean 11.7 grey days.
When is Songkran in 2027 and what happens in Phuket?
The Bank of Thailand lists Songkran as bank holidays on Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 April 2027. TAT has not published a 2027 programme yet. Its 2026 listing included the Phuket Water Festival on 11-13 April at Baan Mai Khao and Patong Beach and a Songkran event on Dibuk Road on 13 April. Dates and venues for 2027 can differ.
Are the Similan Islands and Phi Phi open in April?
Yes. The DNP closure table (data as of 7 January 2026) lists the Similan and Surin Islands as closed every year from 16 May to 14 October, so April is among the last months of their season. Maya Bay on Phi Phi closes only from 1 August to 30 September. DNP has not published a 2027 table, and parks can change their rules, so check before you book.
Can you swim on the west coast of Phuket in April?
The flag decides. We found no official wave statistics for April. Rawai municipality's page on Nai Harn warns of very strong waves from May to October, and TMD dates the southwest monsoon from May. In April the prevailing wind at both stations includes the west, so treat it as a transition month and never swim under a red flag.
Phuket in March or April?
March is drier: 80.7 mm on 7.5 days and 3.9 thunderstorm days at Phuket Town, against 135.1 mm on 11.7 days and 7.5 in April. The average high is almost the same, 34.4 and 34.2 °C. April adds Songkran, and hotel occupancy in 2025 was 79.4% in March and 81.8% in April. Details are in Phuket in March.
