Elephant sanctuaries in Phuket sell similar days under similar words: sanctuary, rescue, ethical. The January 2026 World Animal Protection report says venues that offer washing or care-taking often market themselves as sanctuaries or rescue centres, which can mislead tourists. So the choice comes down to what guests actually do, who vouches for the venue, and what you pay. Below is what World Animal Protection tells tourists, which Phuket venues its list and the ACES list name, and what the operators’ own pages publish on price, ages and closed days, all read on 6 November 2026. The venues themselves, their locations and a table of warning signs for the ticket desk are on our elephants without riding page. Phuket Tour is the operator our site works with, and it sells visits to Phuket Elephant Care, so read its prices as one reseller’s.

How do you tell an ethical elephant visit from a harmful one

The word “ethical” is not protected, and we found no official Thai definition we could verify. The most useful public yardstick we found is the World Animal Protection guide for tourists, whose venue list was reviewed in December 2025. What it says:

  • Visit venues where you can look but not touch. If you can ride, bathe or touch an elephant, the guide says, it is because the elephant was cruelly trained
  • Hand-feeding over a barrier is still a limited direct interaction, so such venues get a yellow marker, not a green tick
  • Names prove nothing: sanctuary, rescue centre and retirement home do not mean high welfare
  • Avoid places where elephants cannot move freely or show natural behaviour
  • Hooks should not be used unless in a real emergency
  • A baby elephant you can see or touch, especially away from its mother, means the venue is not elephant friendly. The guide says such venues should not breed elephants

The January 2026 report adds the scale. Of 2,849 elephants at 236 venues in Thailand (February 2024 to January 2025), over half were kept on short chains by day and 7.3% were at observation-only venues. More than half were at venues offering washing or care-taking.

The guide’s page gives tourists no rule on shows or group size and does not explain its scoring. Our own questions fill the gap: is there a show, painting or tricks, how many guests join one round, and do the elephants spend time on chains. On the pages we read, only Phuket Elephant Sanctuary states a chain policy (its elephants rest at night and around noon in large chain-free shelters). None of the three operators below publishes a hook policy.

Which Phuket venues do the two lists name

Two organisations rate or certify Phuket venues, and they do not agree. World Animal Protection is an animal welfare organisation. ACES (Asian Captive Elephant Standards) is a company in Chiang Mai: the venue cards we read show certification years, not levels, and we could not read its criteria.

VenueWorld Animal Protection guideACES listWhat guests do, per its own pages

Hidden Forest Elephant ReserveYellow marker: hand-feeding over a barrierNot listedProgram not checked by us

Read it as two partial views. The one venue with a green tick from World Animal Protection is absent from the ACES list, and the venues on the ACES list that let you feed and bathe elephants are absent from World Animal Protection’s list, which counts such contact as a concern. Its page says listed venues “received the highest scores in our most recent assessment” but does not give the method.

What does an elephant sanctuary visit cost in Phuket

Prices are in baht per person from each operator’s own pages, read on 6 November 2026. “From” means the page shows a starting rate. Prices change by date and by booking channel, so confirm before paying.

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary publishes no child prices on its Phuket page, so the table has none.

Phuket Tour’s card titled “Phuket Elephant Care” (Russian page) lists feeding without transfer at 900 baht for an adult and for a child, with transfer 1,300 and 1,100, feeding with an elephant spa 1,900 and 1,700, a half day 2,200 and 1,900, and a full day 4,200 and 3,200. The card does not say which site, how long each option lasts or what it includes, and its half-day and full-day figures differ from the operator’s own list above. Ask the seller to name the site, the program and the inclusions in writing, then match them to the operator’s page. Phuket Tour’s general page adds that a visit for children under 4 is “most often” free (our translation).

Who can go: ages and children

  • Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. Its programs suit all ages, infants and toddlers included. It offers electric carts with drivers for families with young children and a nursery at its Tree Top Reception, and the canopy walkway is wheelchair-accessible. The adult price applies from age 13, and the pages we opened show no child price
  • Phuket Elephant Care. The FAQ says children of all ages are welcome and strollers are allowed. Child pricing uses age bands that differ by page: adult 11 and over, child 4-10, infant 0-3 on the Half-Day page, but adult 12 and over and child 4-11 on the Sakhu site. A child of 10 to 12 may fall in either band, so ask before you buy
  • Elephant Jungle Sanctuary. The Phuket page states no age limits

Open all year? Closed days, weather and cancellation

  • Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. Open all year except 13 April, and it can also close for private groups or sell out. It operates in all weather and provides umbrellas, boots and raincoats. Tours run only at listed times: if you arrive late, the tour goes on without you and staff take you to join it. Cancel at least 24 hours before for a full refund, and inside 24 hours nothing is refunded
  • Phuket Elephant Care. The FAQ says the doors are open whatever the weather, and its sanctuaries list opening hours of 08:00 to 16:00. For a weather cancellation it offers a full refund or a new date. On the Half-Day page you can cancel up to 24 hours ahead for the booking cost minus payment fees, and bookings close 12 hours before departure
  • Elephant Jungle Sanctuary. The Phuket office is open 09:00-16:00 daily. Booking needs at least 12 hours’ notice for half-day, feeding-and-shower and walking programs and 2 hours for Feed Me. We found no closed days, season or cancellation terms on the page

Sea trips follow different rules, which we cover in what happens if a Phuket tour is cancelled for bad weather.

Where the sources disagree

  • Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. Phuket Tour’s Russian page for it quotes 1,900-2,500 baht per adult and describes feeding with sugar cane and bathing as often included. The sanctuary’s own pages show from 3,000 baht for the half day, feeding ended on 1 April 2026 and bathing is not offered. We trust the sanctuary’s pages for what a visit includes
  • Child age bands at Phuket Elephant Care. 4-10 on the Half-Day page, 4-11 on the Sakhu site
  • “Observe-only” at Sakhu. The site uses that label, yet the programs include making vitamin balls and “water play”. Ask what guests do
  • Prices at resellers. Phuket Tour’s half-day and full-day figures for Phuket Elephant Care are lower than the operator’s own list. The card gives no program details to compare

What to ask before you pay

  • Which site and which program is this, and is it watch-only, feeding or bathing?
  • Is there riding, a show, painting or any trick?
  • Do the elephants spend time on chains, and are hooks used?
  • How many guests join one round?
  • Are there calves, and are they kept with their mothers?
  • What is the age band and price for my child?
  • Are transfer, lunch and insurance included?
  • What happens in bad weather, and until when can I cancel?
  • Does the operator’s own page say the same as you?

What we did not find

  • An official Thai definition or certificate of an ethical elephant venue. ACES is a private company, not a government body
  • The scoring method behind World Animal Protection’s list
  • Child prices at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary and Elephant Jungle Sanctuary
  • A hook policy at all three operators, and a chain policy at Phuket Elephant Care and Elephant Jungle Sanctuary
  • The programs of Hidden Forest Elephant Reserve and Phuket Elephant Nature Reserve, which we did not check
  • A published checklist from Elephant Nature Park or the Save Elephant Foundation: a search of their sites found none

FAQ

How can I tell if an elephant sanctuary in Phuket is ethical?

Start with what guests do. World Animal Protection tells tourists to visit venues where you can look but not touch, to avoid riding, bathing and visible baby elephants, and says hooks should not be used except in a real emergency. Then check the venue against the operator's own program page, not the ticket seller's, and ask about shows, chains and group size. We found no official Thai definition of 'ethical' to check against.

How much does an elephant sanctuary visit in Phuket cost?

On the operators' own pages read on 6 November 2026, from 900 baht for a one-hour feeding visit at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary and 1,250 baht for a one-hour watch-only visit at Phuket Elephant Care in Sakhu. A half day is 2,900 baht at Phuket Elephant Care, from 2,900 baht at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary and 3,000 baht at Phuket Elephant Sanctuary. The 6-7 hour programs cost 5,900 baht at Phuket Elephant Care and from 6,000 baht at Elephant Jungle Sanctuary. Of the three sanctuaries, only Phuket Elephant Care publishes child prices.

What age can children go to an elephant sanctuary in Phuket?

Phuket Elephant Sanctuary says its programs suit all ages, with electric carts for families with young children, and its adult price applies from age 13. Phuket Elephant Care says it welcomes children of all ages and prices a child at 4-10 on its Half-Day page but 4-11 on its Sakhu site, so ask if your child is 10 to 12. Elephant Jungle Sanctuary's Phuket page shows no child prices or age limits.

Are Phuket elephant sanctuaries open in the rainy season?

Phuket Elephant Sanctuary and Phuket Elephant Care both say they open in any weather and hand out rain gear. Phuket Elephant Care offers a full refund or a new date if weather forces a cancellation. Elephant Jungle Sanctuary's page states no season or weather rule.

Which day is Phuket Elephant Sanctuary closed?

Its FAQ lists 13 April, Thai New Year, as the closed day, and says it can also close for private groups or sell out, so check the live calendar. We found no closed days on the pages of Phuket Elephant Care or Elephant Jungle Sanctuary.

Is feeding or bathing elephants ethical?

World Animal Protection counts close contact such as washing and hand-feeding as a concern and says it can mask exploitation. It gives a yellow marker, not a green tick, to venues that offer hand-feeding over a barrier. Phuket Elephant Sanctuary stopped feeding on 1 April 2026 and offers no bathing, while Phuket Elephant Care at Naithon and Loch Palm and most Elephant Jungle Sanctuary programs include both.
