A Phuket beach is chosen by season and by side of the island. The west coast from Patong to Mai Khao faces the Andaman Sea: the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) describes the southwest monsoon as blowing from May to October, and that is when the waves reach the west-coast beaches. Below is what municipalities and the Department of National Parks (DNP) write about the beaches, with an honest note of what we did not find. Checked on 19 October 2026.
Which Phuket beach to choose: the short version
| What you need | Where to look | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Swimming in winter with children | Kata, Kata Noi, Patong | Karon municipality calls Kata a beach for swimming and Kata Noi a family beach without bars; at Patong the waves are not very strong and the bottom shelves gently |
| Quiet and few people | Kata Noi, Yanui, Layan | Kata Noi has no clubs or bars, Yanui is described as a quiet cove, Layan as a calm beach in Sirinat National Park |
| A long beach for walks | Bang Tao, Karon | Bang Tao about 8 km, Karon a little over 3 km |
| A resort with evening life | Patong | Waves are not very strong, but Bangla Road is close, so it will not be quiet |
| A beach near the airport | Mai Khao, Nai Yang | Sirinat National Park is 1 km from the airport according to DNP |
| Dinner by the water | Rawai | Seafood restaurants along the shore, but no swimming: mud and rocks |
For beaches with fewer waves in the rainy season we have a separate guide: Phuket beaches without waves.
What municipalities and the national park say
| Beach | Where | What the official source says | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patong | west | about 3 km, white sand, waves not very strong, shallow water that deepens gradually, banana boats, parasailing, windsurfing and jet skis | Patong Municipality |
| Karon | west | a little over 3 km, almost straight shoreline, fine white sand, fairly strong waves, people mostly sunbathe and walk | Karon Municipality |
| Kata | west | a beach for swimming and diving lessons, a coral reef reaches Ko Pu island, popular with surfers | Karon Municipality |
| Kata Noi | west | a short beach 800 m from Kata, no nightclubs or bars, for families, water clean and calm almost all year | Karon Municipality |
| Nai Harn | south | long, fine sand that is not very white, very strong waves from May to October, not suitable for swimming then | Rawai Municipality |
| Yanui | south | a small cove about 10 minutes from Promthep Cape, quiet, not for water activities | Rawai Municipality |
| Rawai | southeast | mud and rocks, not suitable for swimming, at low tide the water retreats about 100 m, seafood restaurants, boats to the islands | Rawai Municipality |
| Surin | northwest | about 2 km, a public park of 101 rai, more than 20 shops, five-star hotels opposite | Choeng Thale SAO |
| Bang Tao | northwest | about 8 km, five-star hotels and villas, Ko Waew island is protected for its corals | Choeng Thale SAO |
| Layan | northwest | part of Sirinat National Park, Ko Katha island, calm and more natural than other Phuket beaches | Choeng Thale SAO |
| Mai Khao and Nai Yang | north | with neighbouring Sirinat beaches about 13 km of unbroken sand, park 1 km from the airport, sea turtle nesting sites | DNP |
Three caveats on the table:
- The Patong description is not tied to a season, and the word “quiet” for Yanui and Layan means “uncrowded”, not “without waves”
- For Kata Noi the municipality writes about calm water almost all year, but the cove is open to the west, so in May-October check the flag there too
- For Nai Yang, DNP describes sand building up behind a reef that damps waves more than elsewhere. This describes the terrain, not a wave forecast
We did not check official wave descriptions for Kamala, Kalim or the east coast. Area guides with more detail are listed below.
Winter and summer: how the choice changes
According to TMD’s 1991-2020 normals for the Phuket station, 24-82 mm of rain falls a month from December to March and 237-350 mm from May to October. In winter the sea on the west is usually flat and the big beaches with services work: Patong, Karon, Kata, Bang Tao. From May to October the choice narrows to coves, the east coast and the flags. For the month-by-month picture with rainfall, temperature and hotel occupancy see when to go to Phuket, and for the normals see Phuket weather by month.
Beaches by area
- Patong: the busiest beach with Bangla Road, about 3 km
- Karon: a long beach and a resort quieter than Patong
- Kata and in more detail Kata Beach: swimming in winter, a reef by Ko Pu
- Kamala: a calm resort between Patong and the north
- Surin and Bang Tao: the northwest, hotels and villas
- Layan and Mai Khao: the quiet north near the airport
- Nai Harn and Rawai: the south, boats to the islands, strong waves at Nai Harn in summer
Water and flags: what we do not know
We do not rank beaches by water cleanliness. In the open database of the Pollution Control Department (PCD) the latest samples for Phuket stations are dated 16 June to 4 July 2025, which is the rainy season, and PCD does not issue a bathing permission from them. We found no sea temperature figures for Phuket in primary sources.
How to check the sea on the spot:
- Look at the flag: red means do not enter the water, even if the waves look small
- Swim near lifeguards
- Ask your host or a beach cafe how the sea was this morning
What to do if a current pulls you from shore is in red flag and rip current. What to expect from May to October is in Phuket in the low season. The islands around Phuket are in Phuket islands, and beaches in other regions of the country are in Thailand beaches.
FAQ
What is the best beach in Phuket?
There is no single ranking, and tourist top lists disagree. Choose by season and by what is nearby. From December to March almost all west coast beaches work; from May to October people pick bays and the east coast. For a family in winter we would start with Kata and Kata Noi: Karon municipality describes them as beaches for swimming and for family holidays.
Where is the longest beach in Phuket?
Choeng Thale's administration describes Bang Tao as about 8 km, one of the longest on the island. According to DNP, Mai Khao and Nai Yang together with neighbouring Sirinat National Park beaches form an unbroken strip of sand of about 13 km. Karon is a little over 3 km.
Can you swim at Phuket beaches in the rainy season?
You can, but not at every beach and not every day. TMD describes May to October as the southwest monsoon, and the west coast faces the Andaman Sea head on. Rawai municipality warns of strong waves at Nai Harn, and Karon municipality calls the waves at Karon fairly strong. Watch the flag and do not enter the water under a red flag.
Where in Phuket should you not swim?
We found no bans, but two places are directly discouraged by municipalities. Rawai Beach has mud and rocks, and at low tide the water retreats about 100 metres. Nai Harn has very strong waves from May to October. Wherever a red flag is up, do not swim.
Which beach is best near the airport?
The northern beaches of Sirinat National Park: Mai Khao and Nai Yang. DNP says the park is 1 km from the airport, while our Mai Khao district page calculates 11.6 km by road from the airport to the middle of the beach. The seasons are the same as on the whole west coast: calmer in winter, check the flag in summer.
