Official sources do not name the languages of the 191 and 1669 operators. If you are not sure you will be understood, our advice is: name the place first (beach, hotel, landmark), say what happened and how many people are hurt, and keep your phone on.

What to do after a road accident

The UK Foreign Office writes that Thailand has many road accidents, particularly with motorcycles, and the Government of Canada calls accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians extremely frequent. The order of action:

  1. Stop, switch on the hazard lights and do not drive away: according to our guide to traffic rules the law requires a party to an accident to stop, help and report to the police
  2. If anyone is hurt, call 1669 and do not move the person unless you have to
  3. Call the police on 191 or the Tourist Police on 1155
  4. Photograph the vehicles, the plates and the road
  5. Contact the rental company and your insurer before signing any papers. The UK Foreign Office advises telling your travel provider and insurer about a serious incident, and notes that insurers usually require you to talk to your travel provider first

About insurance, honestly: the UK Foreign Office and the Government of Canada warn that riding without a valid licence for that type of vehicle can cost you your payout. What to check in a policy is in our guide to insurance, and licences and compulsory vehicle insurance are in our guide to car rental in Phuket.

What to do after a theft

The Government of Canada advises reporting all crimes to the police where the incident happened, and fraud to the Tourist Police as well.

  • Call 1155 or go to the nearest police station and say what was taken and where
  • Write down the time, the place and what was stolen, and keep photos and messages
  • Block your bank cards and SIM card; this is our advice
  • Ask for a police document and check in your policy what the insurer needs

To complain about fraud or about an officer, the Tourist Police have a complaint form and the address info@touristpolice.go.th; more in our guide on carrying a passport and dealing with police. The Tourist Police Bureau office phone on its website is 02 134 0521.

What to do if your passport is lost or stolen

The Government of Canada writes that passport thefts and losses are common in Thailand. Report it to the police where it happened, then contact your country’s embassy or consulate. Take the numbers from the embassy website; the UK Foreign Office, for example, points its citizens to its page on getting help abroad. We found no current duty-officer phone number for the Russian embassy in official sources.

Sea, hospital and natural hazards

  • Sea: after a jellyfish sting, a current or loss of consciousness call 1669; more in the articles on jellyfish and sea safety and the red flag
  • Hospital: per the UK Foreign Office all hospitals ask for a guarantee of payment before treatment; the Phuket hospitals are in the article on hospitals for foreigners
  • Natural hazards: DDPM 1784 and the TAT line 1672, and notifications about natural disasters are in the Tourist Police app

FAQ

What is the ambulance number in Thailand?

1669, which both the Government of Canada and the UK Foreign Office give. The UK Foreign Office also says an ambulance can be requested through the police on 191. In a life-threatening situation do not look for a hospital yourself, call.

Do the 1155 operators speak Russian or English?

We found no official data on the languages of the 1155 line: TAT says the Tourist Police answer around the clock. For a written approach there is a complaint form on the Tourist Police website and the address info@touristpolice.go.th.

Does the Tourist Police app work without a Thai SIM card?

Yes. The UK Foreign Office says the app is available to tourists without a Thai SIM card, and it has information on attractions and notifications about natural disasters.

What should I do if my passport is stolen?

The Government of Canada says passport thefts and losses are common in Thailand and advises reporting all crimes to the police where they happened. Then contact your country's embassy or consulate, taking the numbers from their website. We found no current duty-officer phone number for the Russian embassy in official sources and do not give one.

Should I call the police after a minor road accident?

Our guide to traffic rules says that under section 78 of the law a party to an accident must stop, help the injured and report to the police, even if not at fault. If you rent a vehicle, also call the rental company and your insurer before signing anything. The full procedure is in the traffic rules guide.
