Phuket has five licensed private hospitals, and each handles insurance in its own way. Below is what the hospitals’ official sites, the Ministry of Public Health list and the JCI directory confirm as of 19 October 2026. We do not rank hospitals: there is no data for a fair comparison of treatment quality.

Bed counts for private hospitals come from the Ministry list of 31.07.2026, for Vachira from the hospital’s site. These are licensed beds, not the number of free ones. The Patong, Chalong and Thalang hospitals are state-run and described on the area pages: Patong, Chalong, Bang Tao.
Where to go from your area

How insurance works in a private hospital
The UK government says plainly that all hospitals in Thailand require a guarantee of payment before treatment. The order, as Bangkok Hospital Phuket describes it:
- You show your passport and insurance card. With your consent the hospital sends the insurer a medical report and a cost estimate and asks for a guarantee of payment (GOP)
- The insurer confirms in writing that it will pay the hospital directly, usually limited by dates, amount or diagnosis. If the treatment changes or runs longer, the hospital asks for an extension
- Approval can be delayed: the assistance company may need to contact your doctor or embassy in office hours, so weekends and public holidays take longer
- The doctor says you are fit for discharge, but the billing department still closes the account, and many insurers issue the final guarantee only after reviewing the itemised bill, which takes several hours
- If you do not want to wait, you pay the outstanding balance as a refundable deposit, which is refunded or cancelled when the final guarantee arrives
What you pay yourself: personal expenses (extra meals, phone calls), deductibles and co-pays, amounts above your policy limit, and what the policy excludes, such as sleep medication or psychological treatment. If the insurer denies the claim (the policy expired, excludes pre-existing conditions, or the trip limit was exceeded), the bill is yours, and the hospital provides reports and invoices for reimbursement.
For an elective surgery or admission without a letter of guarantee, the deposit is typically about 80% of the estimate, per the Bangkok Hospital Phuket FAQ. It accepts Thai baht in cash, US dollars and cards. It does not offer instalments, but suggests writing to info.phuket@bangkokhospital.com before the visit to discuss payment terms.
Direct billing is not offered by every insurer. Bangkok Hospital Phuket, Siriroj and Dibuk all ask you to check with your insurer before you travel that it has a direct billing agreement with that hospital, and warn that agreements are “subject to extensions and temporary or permanent suspensions or cancellations”. Insurer logos on the sites do not replace checking with your own insurer. Insurance department contacts: Bangkok Hospital Phuket +66 76 254 425 and bpk.interinsurance@bangkokhospital.com, Siriroj +66 76 361 888, Dibuk +66 76 298 298 and +66 76 609 050.

What to bring
By the Bangkok Hospital Phuket checklist: passport, insurance card, recent medical reports and lab results, discs with scans, a list of current medications with doses and a referral letter from your home doctor if you have one. If treatment requires a visa extension, the hospital issues a medical certificate for immigration. For an inpatient it helps with photos and documents, and a relative or friend files them. An outpatient goes to immigration in person.
What we do not know
Hospitals do not publish treatment prices on their sites except for some packages and room rates, so we give no figures for consultations or operations. We checked JCI status in the jointcommission.org directory on 19 October 2026: entries exist for Bangkok Hospital Phuket (Hospital Program, date in the entry 23.05.2009) and Bangkok Hospital Siriroj (15.12.2012), and none by name for the other hospitals. The directory is searched by name, so check the current status on the JCI site before an important decision. We found no official site for Mission Hospital Phuket or Apex, and the terms for foreigners at Mission Hospital Phuket and Vachira need to be confirmed by phone. We recheck this page every 90 days.
FAQ
Which hospital in Phuket is the best for foreigners?
We do not rank them: there is no open data that lets you compare treatment quality fairly. What you can check on official sites is the Ministry of Public Health licence (five private hospitals hold one), a 24-hour emergency room, an international patient department and work with insurers. JCI accreditation can be checked in the directory at jointcommission.org: Bangkok Hospital Phuket and Bangkok Hospital Siriroj are listed, Dibuk, Mission and Vachira have no entry. Bangkok Hospital Phuket, Bangkok Hospital Siriroj and Dibuk Hospital publish their terms for foreigners. We could not find an official site for Mission Hospital Phuket on 19 October 2026, so its terms for foreigners are not confirmed.
What is a guarantee of payment (GOP) and what happens without one?
A GOP is the insurer's confirmation that it will pay the hospital directly, usually limited by dates, amount or diagnosis. With your consent the hospital sends the insurer a medical report and a cost estimate and requests the GOP, and asks for an extension if the treatment changes. Without a guarantee, an elective surgery or an admission usually needs a deposit of about 80% of the estimate. After discharge the hospital no longer files the insurance case, so do not leave before the bill and the documents are settled.
What if my insurer is not on the hospital's list or has no direct billing?
You can still be treated. You usually pay and claim reimbursement afterwards, and the hospital provides itemised receipts and medical reports for the claim. Bangkok Hospital Phuket warns that agreements with insurers are sometimes suspended or cancelled, so check with your insurer before you travel that it has direct billing with this exact hospital. Many overseas insurers also pay for follow-up outpatient visits only against receipts.
Who do I call for an ambulance?
Nationwide the ambulance number is 1669 (the National Institute for Emergency Medicine). Bangkok Hospital Phuket has its own ambulance service, extensions 1036 and 1136 on the main number +66 76 254 425, and its surface medical transport is accredited by CAMTS Global for 2025-2028. Its emergency and trauma centre is on extensions 1060-1062. Bangkok Hospital Siriroj runs a 24-hour emergency centre, direct line 076 210 935 or +66 76 361 888 with extensions 1319 and 1321. Dibuk Hospital says on its site that it receives emergency patients 24 hours.
Can I go to a state hospital if I have no insurance?
Vachira Phuket is a 650-bed provincial state hospital. Its site is in Thai, and we found no section for foreign patients or insurance billing terms on it, so ask by phone on +66 76 361 234. The hospital runs the Mahogany Special Medical Clinic for visits outside regular hours. Its page gives the schedule two ways: in one place weekdays 8:30-20:00 and Saturday 8:30-12:00, in the table weekdays 16:30-20:00 and Saturday 8:30-16:30, closed on Sunday and public holidays. Confirm the time by phone on +66 76 361 234, appointments on 076 361 200.
