October in Phuket is the last month of the rainy season and the month when the monsoons change. Below are the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) normals for both island stations, what officials say about waves, which national parks reopen and what is on in October 2026. Checked on 17 October 2026.
Phuket weather in October: TMD numbers
These are 1991-2020 normals. The Phuket station is in Phuket Town in the southeast of the island, Phuket Airport is in the northwest. Rawai, Chalong and Kata are closer to the town station, Nai Yang and Mai Khao to the airport.
| October | Phuket Town (48 564) | Phuket Airport (48 565) |
|---|---|---|
| Mean temperature | 27.6 °C | 27.2 °C |
| Average high | 31.8 °C | 31.0 °C |
| Average low | 24.9 °C | 23.7 °C |
| Rainfall | 336.0 mm | 370.5 mm |
| Rainy days (0.1 mm or more) | 22.7 | 23.1 |
| Humidity | 82% | 85% |
For comparison at the town station: September 350.4 mm, November 178.2 mm, February 24 mm. October is almost as wet as September, while November is half as wet. All months are on the Phuket weather by month page.
How to read “22.7 rainy days”: TMD counts any day with 0.1 mm or more, so an afternoon downpour counts. The TMD report does not give hours of rain per day.
Why October is a transition month
TMD describes the southwest monsoon, which brings rain to the Andaman coast, as blowing from May to October, and the northeast monsoon from October to February. October sits in both. Phuket faces the southwest wind on the west side of the peninsula, so its rains end later than Bangkok’s.
TMD’s cool season outlook, issued on 9 October 2026, expects thunderstorms over 30-50% of the Andaman coast from mid-October to mid-November, heavy rain in places and 1-2 m waves in the Andaman Sea. TMD will update it in the last week of October.
Sea, waves and flags
West coast beaches can still have waves and rip currents in October. Rawai municipality warns of strong waves at Nai Harn from May to October, and Karon municipality describes the waves at Karon as fairly strong.
- A red flag means no swimming. What to do if a current pulls you out is covered in red flag and rip currents
- Bays and the east coast are calmer, see calm beaches in Phuket
- Check storm warnings before a boat trip: boats stay in port on those days
What’s closed and open in October
| Place | Status in October 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Similan Islands | closed until 14 October, open from 15 October | DNP park page |
| Maya Bay, Phi Phi | open: annual closure 1 August-30 September | DNP closure table 2569 |
| Surin Islands | open from 15 October per recent DNP season notices, some bays closed because of coral bleaching | DNP, Krungthep Turakij |
There is a discrepancy for the Similans: the DNP portal says “closed 16 May-14 October every year”, while the park’s older page gave a closure until 31 October. We follow the current portal, but confirm the date with your operator before booking a trip in the second half of October. More on the Similan Islands and Phi Phi pages.
Crowds and hotel occupancy
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS), Phuket hotel occupancy was 77.64% in October 2025, compared with 65.84% in September, 78.62% in November and 86.41% in January. October is busier than September but well below the winter peak. Occupancy is the share of rooms taken, not a price, so it only hints at rates.
Festivals and events in October 2026
| Event | 2026 dates | Where | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vegetarian Festival (Jia Chai) | 10-18 October | shrines and streets of Phuket Town | TAT |
| Iw Keng street processions | 11-18 October | Phuket Town | TAT |
| Night procession of 40+ shrines | 11 October | Phuket Town | TAT |

The Vegetarian Festival lasts nine days on the Chinese lunar calendar, so the dates move every year. The finale on 18 October, per TAT, sends the gods off towards Saphan Hin, with crowds along Thalang Road, Phuket Road and Surin Circle. Jui Tui Shrine is the centre of the festival. If you dislike firecrackers and packed streets, stay away from the old town that week. Our walk through the area: Phuket Old Town.
Should you go to Phuket in October?
Go if:
- you want warmth and the sea, but not necessarily every day
- you want to see the Vegetarian Festival
- you have 10 days or more and can move excursions around
- you are happy to pick a beach by the flag and wind
Pick another month if:
- you have a short holiday with a fixed island plan
- you need a calm sea in front of a west coast hotel every day
- you travel with small children who cannot swim
If your dates can move, see Thailand in October by region: it rains almost everywhere in October, and the Gulf coast peaks in November. Phuket’s dry season runs from December to March, details on Phuket in February.

FAQ
What is the weather like in Phuket in October?
Hot and humid: average highs of 31.8 °C, lows of 24.9 °C and 82% humidity, the highest of the year. TMD 1991-2020 normals give 336 mm of rain on 22.7 days out of 31. TMD counts any day with 0.1 mm or more as a rainy day, so a half-hour shower counts too.
Can you swim in Phuket in October?
Yes, but not on every beach every day. The southwest monsoon still reaches the west coast, and Rawai municipality warns of strong waves at Nai Harn from May to October. Never swim under a red flag. Sheltered bays and the east coast are calmer.
Is October a good time to visit Phuket?
It is if you value warmth and fewer people and can reschedule boat trips. Hotel occupancy in October 2025 was 77.6% versus 86.4% in January (MOTS). It is not ideal for a five-day trip with a fixed island plan, because boats are cancelled when a storm warning is issued.
Is late October better than early October?
TMD does not publish normals by ten-day period. The practical difference is that the Similans reopen on 15 October and November has half the rain (178 mm versus 336). If your dates are flexible, late October to early November gives better odds of a calm sea.
What festivals are on in Phuket in October 2026?
The Phuket Vegetarian Festival (Jia Chai) runs 10-18 October 2026 according to TAT, with street processions on 11-18 October. The end of Buddhist Lent (Ok Phansa) falls on 26 October, the date TAT gives for the Nakhon Phanom boat festival.
