What you will see at Railay

Railay (Rai Leh) is a peninsula in Krabi province between Krabi town and Ao Nang. Cliffs cut it off from the mainland: OpenStreetMap shows no road to the beach, and the nearest one runs about 2 km away behind the hills. So everyone arrives by water, even if they stay in Ao Nang. The peninsula is inside Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, and the DNP park page mentions Rai Le beach, the Railay information centre and Phra Nang cave.

West Railay. The main beach of the peninsula, between high cliffs. Per Wikipedia, a short walking street with restaurants and shops sits here, and paths and trails lead to East Railay.

West Railay: longtail boats at the shore and cliffs at the edge of the bay
West Railay, the main beach of the peninsula

East Railay. This is where boats from the mainland dock: Andaman Wave Master lists the Railey East Floating Pier, and tours from Ao Nang use the Railay Floating Pier (East). The shore is lined with mangroves, and Wikipedia says it is not good for swimming.

Phra Nang beach and cave. A beach at the southern tip of Railay with cliffs on three sides. Thai Holiday Guide says there is no road: take a longtail from Ao Nang in about 15 minutes or walk a short jungle path from East or West Railay. Entry to the beach and cave is free, but there is no drinking water or shade shop, so bring water. At the eastern end of the beach, a shallow cave holds a shrine to Princess Phra Nang, where fishermen leave carved wooden offerings and ask for a safe voyage.

Diamond Cave (Tham Phra Nang Nai). A separate cave with an entrance fee, about a 10-minute walk from Railay village. The showcaves directory (2020 data) lists it as open daily from 08:00 to 17:30, so check the hours on site. Do not confuse it with the Phra Nang cave on the beach.

Rock climbing. Thai Holiday Guide says the limestone walls at Phra Nang carry bolted routes from beginner to advanced, with half-day intro sessions from Railay village. For a day trip it is too much: a lesson takes time, and you are better off staying overnight.

How to get there from Phuket

You reach Railay by water, and the land part is only the road to the pier. Rassada Pier is about 46.5 km in a straight line from Nopparat Thara Pier in Ao Nang and about 49 km from West Railay (calculated from OpenStreetMap coordinates), and the sea route is longer.

DirectFerries lists Bundhaya Speed Boat, Andaman Wave Master and Phi Phi Cruiser on the Rassada-Ao Nang route; the last takes about 9 hours with a call at Phi Phi. The Andaman Wave Master site offers Phuket (Rassada Pier), Ao Nang (Nopparat Thara Beach) and Krabi (Railey East Floating Pier) in its search. The aggregator contradicts itself on crossing times and update dates, so check the timetable for your day with the carrier.

A day at Railay, step by step

The sailing times come from the Rassada Pier site on 18 October 2026. The order of stops ashore is ours and is not part of any operator’s program. With the ferry, Railay becomes a full day.

  1. 08:30 the ferry leaves Rassada Pier, so arrive early
  2. 10:30 the call at Ao Nang, Nopparat Thara Pier
  3. 10:45 the ferry reaches the East Railay pier
  4. Walk to Phra Nang beach: beach and cave first, before the shore gets busy
  5. Lunch in the village or at West Railay, a walk along the promenade
  6. Around 14:30 head back to the East Railay pier
  7. 15:15 ferry from Railay, 15:00 from Ao Nang, and 17:00 arrival at Rassada

That is about 4.5 hours ashore between 10:45 and 15:15. Thai Holiday Guide says Phra Nang beach is busiest from roughly 11:00 to 15:00, when day-tour boats arrive, and quieter early in the morning or if you walk in.

How long it takes and when to go

The whole day is about 9-10 hours counting the trip to Rassada Pier from your hotel: the ferry 08:30-10:45 out, 15:15-17:00 back, and 30-60 minutes to reach the pier from your part of Phuket. DNP splits the park’s climate into two seasons: dry from January to April, rainy from May to December, with the most rain in July and the least in February. The average annual rainfall is 2,231 mm per DNP.

PeriodWhat to expect
January-Marchdry, the calmest sea for the ferry and speedboat
Aprilhot, the sea is still calm, the first storms are possible
May-Octoberrain and waves, sailings are more often delayed or changed
November-Decemberrain eases, the sea is still uneven

More in Phuket’s climate by month. On 18 October 2026 the DNP status page does not list Phra Nang cave or the Railay beaches as closed.

Park fee and what it covers

Railay, Phra Nang cave and Ao Nang are inside Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. The DNP table (revision of 2 June 2023) lists THB 200 for a foreign adult and THB 100 for a child for the general park territory. The Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh and Ko Mai Phai zones cost THB 400 and 200, but they do not apply to Railay. The Phuket Tour Krabi islands (ferry + speedboat) program lists the park entrance as a separate THB 200 per person. The park page does not say where the fee is collected on an independent trip to Railay: keep your receipt and carry it, because DNP asks visitors to show it on inspection.

What to do in rain and rough seas

  • The ferry is cancelled or delayed. The carrier decides based on the weather, so buy a ticket that allows rescheduling and ask about it in advance
  • Rain but a calm sea. The crossing still runs, but Phra Nang beach has no shade, while Diamond Cave sits in a cliff next to Railay village
  • Rainy season. If the day matters, pick the mainland tour in Krabi: it depends less on the sea

Safety

  • Life jackets. Wear one on a longtail or speedboat if you are not a confident swimmer
  • Landing. The East Railay pier and the beaches are often wet from boats: water shoes and a dry bag protect your phone
  • High tide. Thai Holiday Guide says the sand at Phra Nang narrows at high tide and you may need to wade to reach the shrine, so check a tide chart
  • Cliffs. Do not climb the walls without an instructor and protection, because group lessons run at Phra Nang
  • Offerings. Do not touch the figures in the cave: it is a place where people ask for a safe voyage
  • Insurance. Make sure your policy covers boat trips and climbing

Who it suits and who should skip it

  • Suits couples and friends. The beach and cave, a walk and lunch at Railay fit the ferry timetable
  • Suits children. If a child copes with 2 hours on a ferry, the water at Phra Nang is calm per Thai Holiday Guide
  • Not for pregnant travellers or anyone with a bad back on a speedboat. Operators of such tours do not take them, so ask about the ferry
  • Not for anyone prone to seasickness. The last stretch to Railay is still by water
  • Not for anyone who wants a sunset or climbing. You cannot fit that into 4.5 hours ashore

FAQ

How do you get from Phuket to Krabi or Ao Nang, and on to Railay?

There are two ways. A ferry or speedboat from Rassada Pier to Ao Nang or Railay: per Rassada Pier the ferry leaves at 08:30 and reaches Railay at 10:45. Or a minivan by road to Ao Nang, 181.9 km and about 2 h 45 min (OSRM), then a longtail to Railay in about 15 minutes.

Can you visit Railay from Phuket in one day and come back?

Yes. On the Rassada Pier timetable you reach Railay at 10:45 and leave at 15:15, so you get about 4.5 hours ashore. That is enough for Phra Nang beach, a walk and lunch, but not for a sunset or climbing. For those, stay a night in Krabi.

How much does it cost to enter Railay and Phra Nang beach?

Railay is inside Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, where the DNP table lists THB 200 for a foreign adult and THB 100 for a child. The Phuket Tour Krabi islands program lists the same THB 200 per person as a separate item. Thai Holiday Guide says entry to Phra Nang beach and cave itself is free.

What is Phra Nang cave at Railay?

It is a shallow cave at the edge of Phra Nang beach with a shrine to a princess, where fishermen leave carved wooden offerings and ask for safe voyages. Boat crews stop here out of respect for the tradition. Do not touch the offerings.

When is the best time to go to Railay?

DNP says the park is dry from January to April and rainy from May to December, with the most rain in July and the least in February. Phuket's TMD normals show 49.9 mm in January, 24.0 mm in February, 240.2 mm in July and 350.4 mm in September. In the rainy season sailings are more often changed because of weather, so check the forecast for your day.

Is Railay suitable for children and pregnant travellers?

Children are fine if they cope with 2 hours on a ferry: Thai Holiday Guide describes the water at Phra Nang as calm and clear. Operators of island tours do not recommend speedboats for pregnant travellers or those with spinal injuries (Tisland, Thai Holiday Guide), so ask your carrier about the ferry. Tisland sells a child ticket from age 4.

Railay or Ao Nang: where should you stay?

Ao Nang is on the road, and from there Railay is about 15 minutes by longtail, while Railay itself has no road. See our Krabi pages for both places. For a night at Railay or Ao Nang, move from Phuket for 1-2 nights, because a single day only gives you a first look.
