What you will see by canoe

Sea canoes in Phang Nga Bay go to three kinds of places: caves in karst cliffs, enclosed lagoons and mangrove channels. On its park page the DNP lists the park’s caves: Nak, Kaeo, Kong Kang (Mangrove Cave), Khang Khao (Bat Cave), Pin and Lot, and names a boat ride or a paddle among the activities. Which of them a tour enters depends on the operator and the tide.

Ko Hong. “Hong” is Thai for “room”: a lagoon inside a rock reached through a cave (Southeast Asia Pilot). The lagoon has its own page, Ko Hong in Phang Nga.

Ko Phanak. Cliffs with caves. On Simba Sea Trips you paddle caves and hidden lagoons at Phanak and Hong; on Phuket Tour it is the first canoeing stop.

Tham Lod. On Love Andaman’s early program the canoeing is in Tham Lod cave, at 11:25. The DNP lists Lot cave among the park’s caves.

Mangrove channels. Phuket Tour takes canoes through mangroves. The park, per the DNP, protects mangrove forests on limestone and other soils.

How the canoeing works

An operator’s paddler steers. Simba Sea Trips provides a local paddle guide in every canoe and issues helmets and torches for the caves, plus life jackets and dry bags. Phuket Tour describes passages where you duck or lie flat in the canoe under overhanging rock. What you actually see depends on the water level: Simba says the order of stops changes with the tide.

How long it takes and when to go

The day takes 8-10 hours including transfers. The DNP describes the sea in the bay like this: moderate to strong waves from May to October, calm in the northeast monsoon except in November, when waves range from moderate to very heavy. The bay is sheltered by islands, so tours run almost all year.

Phuket rainfall by month, mm

PeriodWhat to expect
December-Marchthe driest months per TMD, calm sea per the DNP
Apriltransition month, about 135 mm of rain
May-Octobersouthwest monsoon, higher waves, 237-350 mm of rain a month
Novemberthe DNP notes a rougher sea, about 178 mm of rain

Tide window: Thai Holiday Guide says the passage into the Ko Hong lagoon is usable roughly two hours either side of low tide. The DNP does not state this, so ask your operator for hours; water-level forecasts are published by the Royal Thai Navy Hydrographic Department. More on weather in Phuket climate by month.

Getting there and how long it takes

Some programs leave by boat from Phuket piers (Love Andaman returns to Panwa pier), others drive you to a pier in Phang Nga. To Tha Dan pier, the park headquarters, it is 86.4 km and about 90 minutes without traffic from Phuket Old Town, and 89.8 km and about 95 minutes from Patong (OSRM route on OpenStreetMap). Ko Hong lies about 5.5 km south of Khao Phing Kan by OpenStreetMap coordinates (our straight-line calculation). To the first islands it is about 20 minutes by speedboat and 35-40 minutes by big boat (Phuket Tour).

Park fee and what is included

The Ao Phang Nga park fee per the DNP table (revision of 02.06.2023): THB 300 per foreign adult and THB 150 per child, Thai citizens THB 60 and THB 30. Phuket Tour and John Gray’s list the fee in the programme. It is not on Simba’s list of inclusions, so ask before paying. Keep the receipt with you.

What to do in rain and rough water

The bay is sheltered by islands, but boats stay in during storms and the operator decides. Simba’s page lists only free cancellation 24 hours ahead, with no weather terms. Spare days in your trip help: move the canoeing to a clear morning. For a rainy day on Phuket try the Phuket Aquarium.

Safety

  • Operators issue life jackets, helmets and torches for the caves (Simba Sea Trips); Love Andaman says every boat seat has a life jacket
  • Be careful in the channels between rocks: Southeast Asia Pilot says swimming in the passages can be dangerous because of strong currents, especially at spring tides
  • Private boats are not allowed into the main Ko Hong cave, the same source says
  • Do not touch stalactites, and take your litter with you

Who it suits and who should skip it

  • Suits anyone who wants to see caves and lagoons from the water without paddling skills
  • Suits children from 4 who are calm in a boat and ready for a long day
  • Skip it if you are uneasy under low ceilings and in tight passages
  • Skip it if you want a beach and long snorkelling
  • Skip it if you are pregnant and going by speedboat: you need the big boat and your doctor’s approval

FAQ

What is sea canoeing in Phang Nga Bay and how is it different from the James Bond Island tour?

The James Bond Island tour is the whole day: the Ko Tapu rock, lunch in a village, a beach stop. Sea canoeing is one part of that day, where you sit in a canoe with a paddler and enter caves and lagoons such as those on Ko Phanak and Ko Hong. The day itself is covered on the James Bond Island page.

How much is the entry fee for Ao Phang Nga National Park?

A foreign adult pays THB 300 and a child THB 150, Thai citizens THB 60 and THB 30, per the DNP table, revision of 02.06.2023. Phuket Tour and John Gray's include the fee in the programme; Simba does not list it as included, so ask in advance. Keep the receipt with you: the DNP asks visitors to show it on inspection.

Do I need paddling experience?

No. Simba Sea Trips provides a local paddle guide in every canoe, and Phuket Tour says the paddler takes guests through the rocks and mangroves. You ride as a passenger. Under low ceilings you sometimes have to duck or lie flat.

Can children go canoeing in the bay?

Operators' child fares start at age 4, and Love Andaman counts children as ages 4-11 and up to 120 cm tall. The paddler steers, life jackets are issued, but the day is long with little shade. Simba does not state a minimum age for the canoes, so ask when booking.

Does the tide affect the canoeing?

Yes. Simba Sea Trips says the order of stops changes with the tide, and Thai Holiday Guide says the Ko Hong lagoon passage is usable roughly two hours either side of low tide. The Royal Thai Navy Hydrographic Department publishes water-level forecasts. The DNP does not confirm that window, so check the hours with your operator.

Can pregnant travellers go sea canoeing in Phang Nga Bay?

Love Andaman marks its speedboat tour as unsuitable for pregnant travellers. Phuket Tour offers a separate big-boat tour with canoeing where you can walk the deck. See your doctor before going.

How long does the canoeing itself last?

Operators do not give an exact paddling time. Thai Holiday Guide says multi-stop bay tours leave about 30-45 minutes at Ko Hong, and a review on Simba's page mentions at most 40 minutes between stops. For more time on the water look at small-group or private tours.
