How fishing in Phuket works

Fishing in Phuket is mostly an organised boat trip. You do not buy a licence or hunt for a shore spot: the operator takes you by boat to the fishing grounds, supplies rods and bait, and cooks the catch for lunch. The kinds of fishing Phuket Tour describes:

  • Trolling. Lures are towed behind a moving boat, catching tuna, barracuda and other predators
  • Bottom fishing. The line goes almost to the bottom for snapper and grouper along the reef line
  • Popping, jigging, casting. Sport techniques for experienced anglers: surface lures, vertical jigging, long casts with heavy lures
  • Night fishing. After sunset, trolling or bottom fishing; per Phuket Tour, squid, octopus and barracuda
  • Lake fishing. At paid fishing parks, calmer than the sea and suited to beginners and families

What you will see and catch

Racha Yai. An island south of Phuket, not a national park. Tisland stops here: you can go ashore, swim, snorkel or bottom fish. Phuket Tour names Racha as a place for tuna, king mackerel and barracuda.

Crab traps and spearfishing. Tisland’s programme includes a crab-trap check and a spearfishing demonstration.

Lunch from the catch. The guide cooks lunch on board from the day’s catch: sashimi from fresh fish (when available), fried fish, Thai soup, rice and fruit.

Phuket Tour also describes sport fishing for sailfish, giant grouper and marlin, and names places inside national parks, where fishing without permission is not allowed. Check programmes like that with extra care.

Trip programme step by step

Tisland’s programme as of 18 October 2026:

  1. 5:30-5:45 am hotel pickup
  2. 6:45 am Chalong Pier, meet the guide
  3. 7:15 am out to sea: trolling, bottom fishing, a crab-trap check, a spearfishing demonstration
  4. 11:00 am stop at Racha Yai: beach, swimming, snorkelling, bottom fishing
  5. Lunch on board from the catch
  6. 1:00 pm heading back, fishing on the way
  7. 3:00 pm back at Chalong Pier, a photo with the catch

How long it takes and when to go

Tisland’s programme takes about 11 hours with transfers. The boat leaves in the dark to be on the best spots while the sea is calm. Phuket Tour calls the dry season, November-April, the best time for the sea and May-October for lakes.

Getting there and how long it takes

The trip starts at Chalong Pier on the south-east of the island. Transfer from the main areas of Phuket is part of Tisland’s programme; from Thalang, Layan, Nai Thon, Mai Khao, Nai Yang and Panwa there is a surcharge. If you drive yourself, times are OSRM estimates on OpenStreetMap data, without traffic:

FromTo Chalong Pier
Kata7.0 km, about 12 min
Karon8.8 km, about 13 min
Phuket Town10.8 km, about 16 min
Patong18.6 km, about 24 min
Airport HKT41.4 km, about 51 min

From Chalong Pier to Racha Yai is about 24 km in a straight line, farther by sea. Route: Kata to Chalong Pier.

Rules, licence and national parks

  • National parks. Fishing in a park without permission is not allowed. On 20 Feb 2026 Thai PBS reported a complaint by Kaeng Krachan National Park against someone running fishing outings there: a breach of the national parks law, up to 5 years or a fine up to 500,000 baht. In 2019 Thai PBS reported a similar case in Mu Ko Chumphon National Park. Near Phuket the national parks are Phi Phi, the Similan Islands, Ao Phang Nga and Sirinat, and any trip that promises fishing there needs checking
  • Licence. We found no official text on a licence for tourist anglers in open sources on 18 Oct 2026. On an organised trip the operator deals with permits; ask them
  • Catch. We found no rules in the sources on size or quantity for tourists; ask the guide what to release

What to do in rain and swell

Tisland issues raincoats in case of bad weather. In a storm or heavy swell the boat may not go out; the captain decides. Ask the operator about rescheduling or a refund before paying. A fallback: snorkelling at Coral Island on a calm day.

Safety

  • Sun. There is little shade on the water; Tisland advises SPF 50+, sunglasses, a hat and a long-sleeved shirt
  • Seasickness. Take the tablet before you leave the pier
  • Hooks and tackle. Follow the guide’s instructions on board and protect your face and hands when casting
  • National parks. Do not agree to fish in a national park without permission
  • Children. Tisland’s page states no age limits; ask the operator

Who it suits and who it does not

  • Suits. Beginners and groups who want a day at sea with a rod and a lunch from the catch
  • Does not suit. Anyone who gets badly seasick, cannot spend 11 hours on a boat, or wants to fish inside a national park

FAQ

Do I need a fishing licence in Phuket?

We found no official text on a licence for recreational anglers, so we cannot say one is or is not required. On an organised trip the operator deals with permits, so ask when you book. Fishing in national parks without permission is not allowed.

Can I fish in the national parks near Phuket?

Not without permission. In February 2026 Thai PBS reported that Kaeng Krachan National Park filed a complaint against a person who ran fishing outings in the park: the national parks law provides up to 5 years in prison or a fine up to 500,000 baht. Near Phuket the parks are Phi Phi, the Similan Islands, Ao Phang Nga and Sirinat, so be especially careful with programmes that promise fishing there.

What do you catch at sea near Phuket?

Operators name tuna, trevally, mackerel, barracuda and grouper. Phuket Tour describes Racha as a place for tuna, king mackerel and barracuda, and Tisland trolls, bottom fishes and checks crab traps. The result depends on the day and the season, and nobody can guarantee a catch.

When is the best time to fish in Phuket?

Phuket Tour calls November-April the best time for the sea and May-October for lakes. Outside the dry season the open sea has more swell, which makes fishing harder. Check the monthly picture in the Phuket climate section.

Can children and beginners go?

Tisland's programme includes a companion option: a guest who comes along without fishing. Its page states no age limit, so ask the operator when you book. For beginners the guide explains the fishing, and rods are included.

What if I get seasick?

Tisland advises bringing a seasickness tablet. The day is long, 11 hours, and the sea off Phuket is open water; fishing at Racha happens both underway and at anchor. If you get badly seasick, choose lake fishing or another trip.

What happens in rain?

Tisland issues raincoats in case of bad weather. In a storm the boat may not go out, so ask the operator about rescheduling or a refund when you book. In the rainy season, May-October, the swell is higher and many days are unsuitable for the sea.
