Certificate of Residence can refer to different Thai documents. For a driving licence or a vehicle transaction, the task is proving your current address. Start by naming the service and the office that will receive the document, then choose the appropriate application.
Choose the right certificate
| Your task | What to confirm | What not to substitute automatically |
|---|---|---|
| Obtain or exchange a Thai driving licence | Address evidence accepted by your DLT office | A tax-residence certificate |
| Buy or sell a car or motorcycle | Issuing authority, purpose and number of originals required by the registration office | Just a rental agreement or TM30 receipt |
| Establish tax residence | Revenue Department and tax-treaty requirements | A driving-licence address letter |
| Meet a bank’s requirements | The list for your particular bank and branch | Someone else’s DLT document package |
BOI’s page for LTR holders describes DLT’s requirement for a work permit or residence evidence issued by a Thai or foreign government authority. This establishes the document’s purpose; confirm whether your particular permit or letter satisfies the receiving office.
The Revenue Department’s Certificate of Residence addresses tax-treaty residence. Its supporting documents include tax returns, a tax-payment receipt and tax identification. Sharing the word Residence does not make it interchangeable with an address certificate.
Arrange the application
- Ask the recipient for the exact document, acceptable issuer, purpose, number of originals and acceptable age of the certificate
- Identify the Immigration office responsible for your address and confirm whether it accepts applications under your immigration status
- Request its current document list, appointment procedure, processing time, payment and collection arrangements
- Reconcile your passport, latest entry, permission to stay and address across the supporting documents
- Submit the agreed package, retain the acknowledgement and check the certificate when collecting it
Do not apply another city’s price or turnaround to your office. The sources checked do not establish one fee and processing time for address certificates in every province. Obtain your office’s answer before committing to a driving test or vehicle transaction.
Complete the address form
The Immigration Division 1 form published by BOI asks for personal and passport details, arrival date, permission to stay, full address and telephone number. Its purpose options include a driving licence and buying or selling a car or motorcycle.
Copy the address from your accommodation documents: number, moo where applicable, lane or road, subdistrict, district, province and postcode. A condominium’s shortened ride-hailing name is not a complete address. Match your name to your passport.
The published PDF retains a TM6 field. If you arrived using TDAC, do not invent an old arrival-card number. BOI’s current instructions recognise TDAC; ask the receiving office how to complete the older field. The address form does not display a TM16 designation, so do not select a different application simply because an informal checklist mentions that number.
A verified LTR example
BOI publishes this procedure for LTR holders applying at Immigration in TIESC, One Bangkok. It is a specific example checked on 21 October 2026, rather than a universal Phuket or Pattaya checklist.
| Item | BOI’s published requirement |
|---|---|
| Application | Completed Application Form Residence Certificate in Thailand |
| Address evidence | TM30 notification receipt |
| Passport | Original and copies of bio, visa and latest Thai entry-stamp pages |
| Arrival information | TDAC for arrivals after 1 May 2025; TM6 in the stated applicable cases |
| Processing | The page states 15 days after submission |
BOI also comments on the optional TM30 check-out date: when provided, it must be at least three months after check-in. This is not a requirement for every applicant to have already lived in Thailand for three months.
For a different visa or office, ask separately about photographs, copy counts, rental evidence and earlier notifications. They are not presented here as a mandatory national package without a confirmed local procedure.
How TM30 fits in
TM30 records the accommodation notification made to Immigration by the householder, owner or person providing the accommodation. Its receipt supports the address-certificate application in BOI’s procedure. An application and separate certificate still follow that notification.
If you have moved, resolve the current address evidence with your accommodation provider first. See the long-term rental guide for housing-document questions. A 90-day TM47 report serves another purpose and does not replace the address certificate either.
Can your embassy issue a letter?
BOI tells LTR holders to ask their own embassy or consulate about this option. Availability varies: the Australian Consulate-General in Phuket explicitly says it does not issue address letters for Thai driving licences and directs applicants to Thai Immigration.
Check both ends: whether your mission provides the letter and whether the receiving office accepts it. Coordinate address proof before arranging the remaining driving-licence steps. For a bank account, obtain the requirements from the branch you intend to use.
FAQ
Is TM30 the same as a Certificate of Residence?
No. In BOI's published procedure the TM30 receipt supports an application for a separate address certificate.
Can any Immigration office issue it on the same day?
The sources checked establish no such national rule. Confirm the office for your address, eligibility, documents, processing time, payment and collection before arranging a test or transaction.
Is a tax Certificate of Residence suitable for a driving licence?
The tax document serves a different purpose. Agree acceptable address proof with DLT rather than choosing a certificate by its English name alone.
