Licence, insurance, helmet and road

Licence

A car needs category B on your national licence plus an international driving permit (IDP), or a Thai car licence. Without an IDP the police and insurers can refuse: the Vienna Convention obliges states to recognise Annex 6 licences, but roadside checks and insurance terms rely on the IDP. The partner also asks for a passport with a valid visa or entry stamp.

Insurance

Every car in Thailand carries compulsory insurance: it pays for harm to people (treatment up to 80,000 baht per person when another driver is at fault, the first 30,000 baht regardless of fault), but not for car repairs. The partner did not state the voluntary insurance terms for this car in the listing, and we confirm them before handover: excess, tyres and glass, other drivers.

Seat belts, children and the road

The driver and all passengers in every row must wear seat belts, with a fine of up to 2,000 baht (section 123). A child under 6 rides in a child seat. Traffic keeps left, and at a roundabout you give way to cars already on it.

Deposit

Refundable deposit $300, the partner accepts several currencies. Film the car at handover and at return: body, wheels, interior, fuel level.

Rental contract

You sign the rental contract with the partner, not with Thaipedia. We take your request and pass it to the partner. Before paying, ask for a written contract with the repair price list, deposit terms and insurance terms.

Who it suits and who it does not

Suits

  • Families, three people or more
  • Longer trips and the rainy season: dry and air-conditioned

Does not suit

  • Without category B
  • Solo travellers going to the beaches: a scooter is simpler and cheaper

FAQ

Which licence do I need to rent a car

You need category B plus an IDP, or a Thai car licence. Without the right category the fine is up to 1,000 baht, and after an accident the insurer may refuse to pay. Details in our guides on licences and traffic rules.

Can I rent it for a week or a day

The partner rents out vehicles from 3 days. We confirm the daily price when you send a request. For a month the price is usually better than 30 days at the daily rate.

How does hotel delivery work

Delivery is paid. Give your hotel or area in the request and we name the amount and time. If you prefer to collect it yourself, say so in your wishes.

Why is there no monthly price

The partner has not given a monthly price, or gave it long ago, and we do not show an outdated price. Send a request and we confirm the price, deposit and availability for your dates.
