If you are bringing US dollars to Thailand, the denomination of your notes decides the rate you get. Below are official buying rates from SuperRich and Bangkok Bank, taken from their websites on 17 October 2026.
Why a USD 100 note gets more baht than a USD 1 note
Thai money changers and banks quote the dollar rate separately for each group of denominations. Large notes get the best rate.
| Note | SuperRich Thailand, 17 Oct 2026 | SuperRich 1965, 17 Oct 2026 | Bangkok Bank, 15 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| USD 100 | THB 33.33 | THB 33.33 | THB 33.05 |
| USD 50 | THB 33.33 | THB 33.33 | THB 33.05 |
| USD 20 and 10 | THB 33.27 | THB 33.25 | THB 32.58 |
| USD 5 | THB 33.22 | THB 33.20 | THB 32.58 |
| USD 1 | THB 33.07 | THB 33.00 | THB 32.23 |
Buying rates, meaning baht you receive per dollar. SuperRich Thailand: Ratchadamri 1 head office, 10:17. SuperRich 1965: Silom Plaza branch, 10:47. Bangkok Bank: rate round 2 on 15 October, 14:30. Bangkok Bank groups USD 5-20 and USD 1-2 notes, which we split by denomination.
In money terms: USD 1,000 in hundreds gets THB 33,330 at SuperRich and THB 33,050 at Bangkok Bank. The same thousand in single dollars gets THB 32,230 at Bangkok Bank, THB 1,100 less.
Old series and note condition
SuperRich and Bangkok Bank publish rates by denomination only, with no separate rules for older series. The only official rule on issue year we found comes from the Royal Thai Embassy in Moscow, which refuses USD notes issued before 2009 for visa fees and requires notes in good condition.
Travellers in Phuket chat groups report mixed results with older notes: some changed 2006 series at the normal rate, others were turned away or offered less. That is anecdotal, not a published policy. To be safe, bring newer series without tears, writing or heavy folds.
Where to exchange
- SuperRich. Two separate firms, SuperRich Thailand (orange) and SuperRich Currency Exchange (1965) (green), both with live rates online. SuperRich 1965 charges no commission on cash, sells currency at the same rate in every branch and buys at slightly different rates by branch
- Banks. Bangkok Bank, Kasikornbank, Krungsri and others exchange cash at branches and booths. In October 2026 Bangkok Bank’s rates were below SuperRich’s, especially for small notes
- Airport. Airport booths do not publish rates on official websites. Travellers usually change a little for the taxi and first expenses and the rest in town. More on arriving in Phuket in our airport guide
Bring your passport: SuperRich 1965 exchanges cash only against an original, valid passport, up to THB 800,000 per day per passport.
What to avoid
Do not exchange cash with strangers from chat groups promising a “better than bank” rate or a swap via QR transfer. This is one of the most common money scams, covered in our guide to scams in Thailand. For paying without cash, see QR payments in Thailand, and for using cards at ATMs, see foreign card ATM fees.
FAQ
Do they accept old US dollar bills in Thailand?
SuperRich and Bangkok Bank publish rates by denomination only and say nothing about note series on their websites. The one official rule we found is the Royal Thai Embassy in Moscow's: it refuses USD notes issued before 2009 and requires notes in good condition. Travellers report mixed results with older series, so swap them before the trip if you can.
Where is the best place to exchange money in Thailand?
Among the rates we checked in October 2026, SuperRich paid THB 0.28 more per USD 100 note than Bangkok Bank, or THB 280 on USD 1,000. Airport exchange booths do not publish rates on official websites, so we cannot compare them. A common approach is to change a small amount at the airport and the rest in town.
What is the difference between SuperRich and SuperRich 1965?
They are two separate companies with similar names: SuperRich Thailand (orange) and SuperRich Currency Exchange (1965) (green). Both publish live rates online, and on 17 October 2026 both paid THB 33.33 for a USD 100 note. SuperRich 1965 says it charges no commission on cash exchange and needs your original passport.
Do I need my passport to exchange money in Thailand?
Yes. SuperRich 1965 exchanges cash only against an original, valid passport for foreigners and caps exchanges at THB 800,000 per day per passport. Check the rate on the website before you go, as it changes during the day.
How much cash can I bring into Thailand?
Under Bank of Thailand rules, foreign banknotes worth more than USD 15,000 (or equivalent) and more than 450,000 baht in cash must be declared to Thai Customs on arrival and departure. The Royal Thai Embassy in Singapore still cites USD 20,000 and notes that failing to declare is a criminal offence, so go by the lower figure.
