Thailand puts off 1,000-baht fee on every trip abroad
The Thai government has delayed a plan to charge 1,000 baht to everyone leaving the country. On 22 October, Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas cited economic uncertainty and high energy costs caused by the war in the Middle East.
What happened
- The fee was only a proposal: the Revenue Department had held public consultations on it
- It would have applied to everyone leaving the country, including foreign tourists at the end of their trip
- According to the minister, the fee would add to the burden on people and airlines right now
- The government expects a strong tourist season in the fourth quarter of 2026 and does not want to add costs
- No date has been given for when the idea might return
What it means for youYou do not have to pay 1,000 baht when you leave Thailand: the fee has not been introduced. If the plan comes back, it will affect both tourists and residents.
